SGA's Rivals Aren't Players. They're All-Time Greats with OKC Thunder Wire’s Clemente Almanza
The Oklahoma City Thunder lost in the Western Conference Finals last year. Then they traded Lu Dort, Aaron Wiggins, and Isaiah Joe. And Clemente Almanza still thinks the window is wide open. In this episode of the Hoopsology Podcast, the lead writer for OKC Thunder Wire breaks down a roster that enters the year as a co-title favorite with the Spurs. Those three exits were not a teardown. Sam Presti called them a quarter of last year’s rotation minutes, cost-cutting moves to stay out of the second apron. Almanza walks through what that actually means: Cason Wallace taking Dort’s starting spot, Ajay Mitchell coming off a breakout year (and a series where he made Austin Reaves a non-factor), and a bench that now has to replace three guys who helped win the franchise’s first title. Then he goes somewhere spicier. On Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Almanza’s line is simple: his rivals aren’t active players anymore. They’re the all-time greats. Back-to-back MVP. Thirty-plus points on elite efficiency for four straight years. The all-time record for the longest 20-point streak, past Wilt Chamberlain. Almanza puts this era’s faces in one group — SGA, Jokić, Wemby, Luka, Giannis — and argues the greatness is not being appreciated the way Steph’s 2010s, Kobe’s 2000s, or MJ’s 1990s were. The hate, he says, is the proof. We also get the real variable for 2026-27: health. Chet Holmgren said at media day that the hamstring issues cleared around mid-June. Jalen Williams was basically a non-factor in last year’s run, and Ajay Mitchell missed most of the West Finals with a calf strain. Almanza’s read is blunt. This is title or bust, it has been for three or four years, and if SGA is healthy they should still walk to 60 wins and a top-two seed. He also flags Utah and Dallas, and Cooper Flagg, as the West teams worth watching behind OKC and the Spurs. 🏀 Subscribe to Hoopsology for smart, insider-level NBA and WNBA conversations every week. 💬 Is SGA already in the all-time conversation, or is that too early? If You Can't Play With Caleb Wilson, You Can't Play for the Bulls with CHGO Big DAVE
Chicago Bulls fans are allowed to feel something again — and this time it isn’t blind hope.In this episode of the Hoopsology Podcast, CHGO’s Big DAVE comes on to break down why the 2026-27 Bulls finally feel different. After years of dysfunction and a 31-51 season that missed the playoffs for a fourth straight year, the franchise hit rock bottom… and then started acting like it.The turning point? Michael Reinsdorf looking Bulls Nation in the eye and saying the words fans never expected: “I’m sorry. We screwed up. And I will make this right.” Big Dave says that apology didn’t just land — it healed something in long-suffering fans. From there, the rebuild gets real: Bryson Graham as the new basketball ops lead — the guy who says if he’s the smartest person in the room, the Bulls will fail Tiago Splitter as head coach (Popovich tree) + Taj Gibson back on the bench A bigger player-development staff, more video work, and real collaboration upstairs An open practice at Horner Park — free, public, never-been-done fan access in Chicago And then there’s Caleb Wilson.Big Dave is all-in. Wilson’s summer-league work ethic, the “yeah, I’m next” look at the Jordan statue, the record-setting game where he only cared that they lost, and Kevin Garnett showing up just to watch him — none of it feels fluky. Dave’s line is blunt: if you can’t play with Caleb Wilson, you can’t play for the Chicago Bulls. This isn’t “title or bust” hype. It’s logical optimism — a “fun bad” year full of blocks, run-outs, alley-oops, and a roster where everybody has something to prove. Giddey, Powell, Claxton, Patrick Williams, the young pieces… the proving ground is open.🏀 Subscribe to Hoopsology for smart, insider-level NBA and WNBA conversations every week. 💬 Are you buying the new Bulls era — or still waiting to see it on the floor? His Favorite Call Ever Was When He Kept His Mouth Shut- Nets Radio Analyst Tim Capstraw
Tim Capstraw has been the voice next to the Brooklyn Nets for 25 years — and he still can’t believe they’re letting him hang around. In this episode of the Hoopsology Podcast, the Nets radio analyst opens up about the biggest thrill of his life: his first NBA broadcast with the Jason Kidd-era New Jersey Nets, the three weeks of 5 a.m. prep, and the imposter syndrome of a guy who wasn’t a star player or a famous coach. He walks us through the grind after getting let go at Wagner College — practicing every day at 40 until the calls started coming — and the lucky break that involved Jack Armstrong turning the job down and Mike Breen making a recommendation. Capstraw breaks down the craft of radio: the play-by-play guy paints the picture, the analyst “frames it and zings it,” and why it takes a long time to broadcast like yourself (his Miles Davis line). His favorite moment in broadcasting? The night he kept his mouth shut — silently writing “Pierce” so Chris Carrino could hit the legendary “Paul Pierce rejected!” call in Game 7 vs. Toronto. We also get into the beauty of the modern game’s chess match, why NBA coaches are “cream rises,” his love for Brook Lopez and Cam Johnson, and a honest Nets outlook: player development, Michael Brown’s “it factor,” Julius Randle and Michael Porter Jr., coach Jordy Fernandez, and the blunt rebuild truth — “We need a Jokić. We need a second rounder that turns out to be the best player in the league.” Plus Brooklyn as the “third biggest city,” Barclays Center, and building culture while the Knicks own the championship glow.🏀 Subscribe to Hoopsology for smart, insider-level NBA and WNBA conversations every week. 💬 What’s your favorite Nets radio call of all time? Clippers Scandal, Engelbert Exit & Steph's $116M Bet: Hoopsology ITL
The NBA just hit the Los Angeles Clippers with one of the harshest punishments in league history. On this episode of the Hoopsology Podcast, Matt Thomas, Justin Goodrum and Alan Munzer break down everything: the $30 million fine, the loss of five first-round picks (2029–2033), Steve Ballmer's one-year suspension, Lawrence Frank's six-month suspension without pay, and Kawhi Leonard's $700,000 penalty. Alan explains why he's called this a RICO case from day one, what the Eastern District of New York investigation could mean, and why he thinks Kawhi taking the deal "screwed the Clippers over one more time on his way out of town." We also ask the question every fan should be asking: which other front offices are cleaning their books right now? Then we get into the WNBA's leadership shake-up. Cathy Engelbert is stepping down as WNBA commissioner. We weigh her business wins (team valuations averaging $460 million, record TV viewership, landmark media rights deals) against her strained relationships with players like A'ja Wilson and Caitlin Clark. Who should replace her? We debate Sue Bird, Swin Cash, Shareef Abdur-Rahim and NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum. Plus: is Steph Curry's 2-year, $116 million extension a loyalty move or a real push to compete in the West? And our full WNBA playoff preview: Liberty vs Lynx, Mystics vs Dream, Wings vs Valkyries and Fever vs Aces. He Paints the Game You Can't See: Life as an NBA Radio Voice, Portland Trail Blazers Radio Play-By-Play Announcer Travis Demers
Portland Trail Blazers radio voice Travis Demers joins Hoopsology to go behind the mic on Rip City, NBA broadcasting, and why Portland can win 45-50 games this season! Travis Demers went from calling high school games for $50 a week in Astoria, Oregon, to becoming the Voice of the Portland Trail Blazers on radio. In this exclusive NBA interview, Travis shares his incredible journey from a New York kid obsessed with NBA Inside Stuff and listening to games on the radio, to working at SiriusXM, to getting his break filling in for the Blazers and earning the full-time job. We dive deep into what it really takes to be an NBA announcer: how Travis paints the picture so fans can see, smell, and feel the game, his game-day prep routine, how he handles shot-clock malfunctions and live improvisation, dealing with accusations of bias when you work for the team, and why storytelling and human connection matter more than stats. Plus: why Rip City culture is truly unique — Portland as a one-sport town where the Trail Blazers are embedded in the fabric of the city, what makes Blazers fans the most rabid in the NBA, his take on last season's unpredictability, and his BOLD prediction for 45-50 wins and a top-six seed / play-in run. Toronto Tempo's Wild Inaugural Season: Marina Mabrey's Redemption, Kiki Rice Rookie Year with Savanna Hamilton
In this episode of the Hoopsology Podcast, we sit down with Savanna Hamilton — sports broadcaster and WNBA analyst covering the Toronto Tempo— to break down the Tempo's historic, and often chaotic, inaugural season in the WNBA. Savanna takes us inside the year from the ground up: the surreal experience of documenting an expansion franchise's first season, the relentless injury bug that hit stars like Marina Mabrey, Nyara Sabally, and Kiki Rice, and how head coach Sandy Brondello's run-and-gun system has reshaped the roster around versatile players like Laura Juskaite. We dig into Marina Mabrey's incredible turnaround season — from her "crash out queen" reputation to an All-Star campaign capped by a 53-point outburst and MVP chants from the home crowd — and get an inside look at Kiki Rice's smooth rookie transition despite a shortened, CBA-delayed training camp. Savanna also reflects on the emotional home opener in front of Toronto's first-ever WNBA crowd, what the team means for a new generation of Canadian fans, and how WNBA media coverage in Canada compares to the explosion of interest south of the border. Plus, she shares her take on the league-wide MVP race between Olivia Miles and A'ja Wilson, breaks down the playoff picture, and teases a big career announcement dropping this fall — including her role narrating the upcoming ESPN documentary on the Tempo's inaugural season. "We Don't Want to Leave Anything on the Table" — The Lynx Are Done Waiting with Minnesota Star Tribune's women's sports reporter, Cassidy Hettesheimer
The Minnesota Lynx own one of the best records in the WNBA heading into the playoffs, and Star Tribune women's sports reporter Cassidy Hettesheimer joins Hoopsology to unpack exactly how they got here — and why anything short of a championship this year will feel like unfinished business. Cassidy traces the season back to training camp, when even head coach Cheryl Reeve wasn't sure what to expect with Napheesa Collier sidelined recovering from double ankle surgery. What nobody fully anticipated was Olivia Miles: a rookie the coaching staff projected using full veteran statistical benchmarks rather than typical rookie expectations, who has since exceeded even that. Cassidy breaks down what makes Miles unique among a historically strong rookie class — a playmaking gift that makes everyone around her better, unlocking rim pressure the Lynx offense didn't have in years past — and shares a wonderfully human detail about Miles' transition to the league: figuring out where to sit at the team cafeteria table while simultaneously being trusted to direct All-Stars on the floor. Cassidy details the old-school, mentor-driven culture Cheryl Reeve has built around her, with veterans like Kayla McBride and Courtney Williams intentionally embracing and elevating their rookie floor general. The conversation turns emotional when discussing Napheesa Collier's road back. Cassidy explains how Collier, a deeply goal-oriented player, is drawing on a hard lesson from 2022 — when she rushed back too quickly to share the floor with retiring legend Sylvia Fowles and paid for it in her offseason recovery — to take a slower, more deliberate approach this time, telling reporters she still felt around 80-85% recovered even a month after her return. Cassidy also shares how Collier's FIBA World Cup selection became a meaningful part of that process, giving her valuable competitive reps as a two-time Olympian while representing her country. From there, the two discuss why this season carries championship-or-bust weight after the Lynx's gutting 2024 Finals loss to the Liberty and a disappointing early playoff exit in 2025, and how Minnesota's league-worst free-throw rate could become a real vulnerability against the physical playoff basketball ahead. The episode closes with two well-deserved shoutouts: Kayla McBride's quietly spectacular age-34 season, including her best scoring numbers since 2018 and a franchise single-game three-point record, and a league-wide nod to the Washington Mystics' exciting, ahead-of-schedule youth rebuild. 🏀 Subscribe to Hoopsology Podcast for in-depth NBA and WNBA conversations, insider interviews, and breaking news breakdowns you won't find anywhere else. 👉 Follow Cassidy Hettesheimer: X/Instagram @CassidyHett, and read her Lynx coverage at startribune.com/sports. 👉 Drop a comment: Is this finally the Lynx's championship season? #MinnesotaLynx #WNBA #OliviaMiles #NapheesaCollier #Hoopsology Learn more about your ad choices. One Injury Changed Everything: How the Sparks' Season Fell Apart with Southern California News Group.Reporter John W. Davis
The Los Angeles Sparks sit at 15-25, headed for a sixth straight season without a playoff appearance, and Hoopsology brings in Sparks beat writer John W. Davis (Southern California News Group) for an unflinching look at how a franchise with every natural advantage in the league ended up here. John walks through the organizational chaos that's defined this stretch: four different head coaches since the drought began (Derek Fisher, interim Fred Williams, Curt Miller, and now Lynne Roberts), a revolving door of roster gambles that never got the runway to work, and a front office that kept trading the future for a present that never materialized — including dealing what became Dominique Malonga for Kelsey Plum after landing back-to-back No. 2 picks. He traces the fall from the Sparks' actual championship-caliber core of Candace Parker, Chelsea Gray, and Nneka Ogwumike, and explains why this season's collapse specifically comes down to one moment: Kelsey Plum, playing like a legitimate top-five player in the league, going down with an injury that the team simply had no answer for. The Athletic’s Marcus Thompson: The NBA and WNBA Legends History Forgot
The Athletic's Marcus Thompson II joins Hoopsology to discuss his new book, "Game Changers: The GOATs Who Revolutionized Basketball," and delivers one of the most emotionally resonant conversations about the sport's history you'll hear this year. Marcus explains how the book grew out of his 2021 book "Dynasties," where he realized basketball's greatest eras weren't siloed off from each other but deeply interconnected — you don't get the Warriors without Red Auerbach's Celtics first proving the value of getting from defense to offense faster. Applying that same "family tree" lens to individual players proved far harder, he admits, forcing him to build a strict rubric: not simply the best players, but the ones who fundamentally shifted how we think about the game. Steph Curry anchors that thesis — a player who averaged four threes a game as a rookie and normalized volume three-point shooting for everyone who came after him — but Marcus goes deeper, revealing the uncomfortable truth underneath most "revolutionary" moments: the resistance pioneers had to fight through. Dirk Nowitzki was told by everyone to stop shooting and get into the paint. Steph Curry himself was forced by his high school coach to take five shots a quarter because he didn't want to be seen as a ball hog — the same battle Don Nelson once fought with Steve Nash. And Allen Iverson, Marcus explains with real personal weight as someone who grew up in Oakland, didn't just play differently — he brought an entire culture to the mainstream that the league had spent years trying to airbrush away, literally erasing his tattoos from magazine covers before he made that look the norm. The conversation turns to one of the book's most difficult truths: the WNBA's near-total absence from basketball's collective memory. Marcus speaks with real frustration about players like Tina Thompson, Lauren Jackson, and Ticha Penicheiro — a genuine golden-era Houston Comets dynasty that, in his words, anyone who was actually there knows was special, yet gets dismissed by people who weren't. He connects this to a broader idea he calls "live context" — the impossible-to-translate weight of actually being present for a moment, from waiting all day for a Michael Jordan highlight before the internet existed, to the tension in the building when the Celtics reportedly cut the AC on the Lakers, to the Houston Comets playing on through the grief of teammate Kim Perrot's death. Marcus shares that writing the Candace Parker and Hakeem Olajuwon chapters affected him the most personally, reconnecting him with just how pioneering they both were — Parker as a generational do-it-all talent he'd genuinely forgotten the magnitude of, and Olajuwon as a figure whose story of Muslim identity in America carries a cultural weight rarely discussed in basketball history. Underneath it all is Marcus's real hope for the book: not ending debates about who's the best, but restoring reverence for the players — across the NBA, WNBA, college, high school, and streetball courts alike — whose fights made everything that came after possible. 🏀 Subscribe to Hoopsology Podcast for in-depth NBA and WNBA conversations, author interviews, and breaking news breakdowns you won't find anywhere else. 👉 Follow Marcus Thompson II: @ThompsonScribe across social media, and pick up "Game Changers: The GOATs Who Revolutionized Basketball" — available now, ideally from your local independent bookstore. 👉 Drop a comment: Which player do you think got left out of basketball's "family tree" who shouldn't have been? #MarcusThompson #GameChangers #Hoopsology #NBA #WNBA Learn more about your ad choices. Inside Engelbert's Decision to Retire & Team USA's Wake-Up Call in Berlin with AP national women's basketball writer Doug Feinberg
AP national women's basketball writer Doug Feinberg joins the Hoopsology Podcast for a wide-ranging conversation covering two of the biggest stories in the sport right now: Cathy Engelbert's surprise retirement as WNBA Commissioner and Team USA's up-and-down run at the FIBA Women's World Cup in Berlin. Feinberg, who sat down with Engelbert for a 25-minute exit interview, breaks down why she's stepping away after seven and a half years on the job, what she considers her biggest accomplishment (the transformative CBA that delivered million-dollar salaries and codified charter flights), and why the media narrative around her role in those negotiations doesn't match what actually happened in the room. He also discusses the toll public criticism has taken on her family, what the league is looking for in a successor, the upcoming wave of expansion teams in Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia, and why the so-called transgender "controversy" isn't the issue some want it to be, in Engelbert's own words. The conversation then shifts overseas, where Feinberg is covering Team USA's title defense in person. He explains what really happened in the tense battle with Italy, why Breanna Stewart's leadership steadied a young roster built around Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers, Sonia Citron, and Angel Reese, and teases new reporting on Caitlin and Angel's real relationship. Plus: the case for Belgium and China as tournament dark horses, host nation Germany's run, and how the WNBA's 2028 Olympic roster might take shape under new USA Basketball managing director Sue Bird. "We're Going to Beat Them This Time": Is France About to Dethrone Team USA? With Freelance Women’s Basketball Journalist Eden Laase
With the 2026 FIBA Women's World Cup underway in Berlin, Hoopsology brings in freelance women's basketball journalist Eden Laase (The Athletic, Yahoo Sports) for a deep dive into the tournament's biggest storylines — starting with the team many believe is Team USA's most legitimate challenger yet: France. Eden breaks down exactly how France built its current golden generation, pointing to a rare convergence of elite young talent (Dominique Malonga, Pauline Astier, and Carla Leite among them), the country's growing investment in basketball academies like INSEP, and the outsized influence of Gabby Williams — an American-born naturalized French star who brought a new competitive swagger to the program. Eden also credits Marine Johannes with opening the WNBA pipeline for French players despite pushback from the French federation, a decision that's paid off with France entering the knockout rounds a perfect 3-0 and ranked the tournament's second favorite behind the US, according to Eden, just ahead of a talented Belgium team led by Emma Meesseman and Julie Allemand. The two dig into what makes France so dangerous — elite team defense anchored by Defensive Player of the Year candidate Gabby Williams, and a roster that came within a single point of beating Team USA at the Paris 2024 gold medal game — as well as where they're vulnerable: interior size and a reliance on three-point shooting that may not hold up all tournament long. The conversation turns to Team USA, playing without four-time MVP A'ja Wilson, and the very real chemistry questions that surfaced in a shaky group-stage win over Italy before Breanna Stewart stepped up as a go-to scorer against the Czech Republic. Eden explains why the influx of international players into the WNBA has fundamentally changed the psychology of these matchups, with rival national teams no longer intimidated by facing their own WNBA teammates and opponents. From there, the two zoom out to discuss the broader globalization of women's basketball, including the WNBA's international expansion ambitions, Cathy Engelbert's retirement, League Pass making the league accessible worldwide, and the emergence of alternative leagues like Unrivaled and the mysterious Project B. Eden closes with a scouting report on under-the-radar teams to watch, including a surprising Hungary squad and a South Korea team on the rise, before offering casual viewers a simple way to appreciate the tournament: watch how each country's culture shows up in how its team plays. 🏀 Subscribe to Hoopsology Podcast for in-depth NBA and WNBA conversations, insider interviews, and breaking news breakdowns you won't find anywhere else. 👉 Follow Eden Laase: X/Bluesky @eden_laase, and read her France feature and more at The Athletic. 👉 Drop a comment: Can France actually beat Team USA this time? How Former Players Actually Become NBA Coaches, Explained with Erjaam Hayes, Player Development Program Director for the NBA
Ever wonder how a former player ends up on an NBA coaching staff a few years after retiring? Hoopsology sits down with a leader from the NBA's Coaching Development Program (CDP) — Erjaam Hayes. Originally launched in 1988 as the NBA Assistant Coaches Program before being rebranded in 2022, he breaks down exactly how that pipeline actually works. After sharing a personal origin story rooted in a basketball-obsessed household and childhood trips to Georgetown basketball camps, the guest walks through nearly two decades working inside the NBA's player development and player engagement groups before taking on the CDP. They explain who's eligible (any former NBA, WNBA, G League, or even Basketball Africa League player), and walk through the full eight-month journey: a mostly virtual, Zoom-based curriculum focused on technology training, professional development like resume workshops and mock interviews, and hands-on shadowing opportunities at marquee basketball events throughout the year. The conversation goes deep on what fans typically get wrong about the player-to-coach path — dispelling the myth that these hires either "come out of nowhere" or coast entirely on reputation — and unpacks the real, often-overlooked work: learning to self-advocate without an agent, building relationships, and getting comfortable walking up to strangers at industry events. The guest also details the specific software every candidate learns, including Synergy, Hudl SportsCode, and FastModel, and explains how those tools have transformed player evaluation, scouting reports, and in-game preparation compared to years past. With more than 350 alumni to date — including names like Khalid El-Amin, Juan Dixon, Jawad Williams, Vin Baker, Nisha Curry, and Tamecka Dixon — the program has become a genuine pipeline into NBA, WNBA, and G League coaching staffs. The episode closes with a look at where the program is headed next and a candid discussion of why real coaching, not just raw talent, is what actually wins games at every level of basketball. 🏀 Subscribe to Hoopsology Podcast for in-depth NBA and WNBA conversations, insider interviews, and breaking news breakdowns you won't find anywhere else. 👉 Drop a comment: Which former player do you think would make the best NBA head coach? #NBACoachingDevelopmentProgram #NBA #Hoopsology #CoachingPipeline Podcast Person? 30 Wins or 40? Breaking Down the Washington Wizards' Realistic Ceiling with Greg Finberg
Bullets Forever editor and Wizards Podcast host Greg Feinberg joins Hoopsology for a deep dive into one of the most dramatic rebuild turnarounds in recent NBA history, breaking down everything from the roster's new identity to the arena renovations reshaping the franchise's future. Greg opens by capturing the mood in Washington after a stretch of just 50 combined wins over three seasons: optimism, finally. He traces the arc from a fanbase begging ownership to commit to a real rebuild, through the acquisitions of Trae Young and Anthony Davis, to the franchise winning the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery and selecting BYU standout AJ Dybantsa with the No. 1 overall pick over top prospects Darryn Peterson and Cameron Boozer. Greg explains why Dybantsa's elite scoring and physical tools made him the clear fit for a Wizards offense that ranked among the league's worst the past few seasons. The conversation shifts to Alex Sarr's development, from an infamous 0-for-15 Summer League debut that had fans invoking Kwame Brown comparisons, to a sophomore season where one adjustment — staying near the rim instead of settling for threes — turned him into one of the league's most disruptive interior defenders. Greg breaks down how Anthony Davis' arrival should amplify Sarr's defensive impact even further and unlock a similar offensive role to the one Clint Capela found next to Trae Young in Atlanta. From there, the two dig into Washington's suddenly crowded rotation picture, debating the starting five, the Keyshawn George-versus-Bilal Coulibaly battle for the final starting spot, and where newly acquired DeAndre Ayton fits in as backup center. Greg also shares his honest projection for the Wizards' win total (he lands around 37-42, banking heavily on health), reflects candidly on Anthony Davis' lukewarm initial reaction to the trade and what it'll take for him to fully buy in, and gives a fair assessment of head coach Brian Keefe's future, including two specific late-game coaching decisions from the tank years that raised eyebrows. The episode closes with a look at the season's most anticipated matchups — including Peterson's revenge game in Utah, a loaded Sixers team with LeBron, and a Heat rematch after Bam Adebayo's infamous 83-point outburst — plus Monumental Sports' billion-dollar Capital One Arena renovation set to finish before the 2027-28 season, and a fun debate over whether the franchise should finally bring back the Bullets name. 🏀 Subscribe to Hoopsology Podcast for in-depth NBA and WNBA conversations, insider interviews, and breaking news breakdowns you won't find anywhere else. 👉 Follow Greg Feinberg: X/Twitter @GregFeinberg, and check out his coverage at Bullets Forever (SB Nation) and the Wizards Podcast. 👉 Drop a comment: What's your realistic win total for this Wizards team? #WashingtonWizards #AJDybantsa #Hoopsology #NBA #BulletsForever Podcast Person? Why the Orlando Magic Believe Their Breakthrough Is Finally Coming with radio play-by-play voice of the Orlando Magic Jake Chapman
Orlando Magic radio play-by-play voice Jake Chapman joins Hoopsology for an in-depth conversation about his unconventional path to the booth, the realities of modern sports broadcasting, and why he believes this could finally be the year the Magic break through. Jake opens with a personal memory — falling in love with basketball as a five-year-old in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, dribbling a black Magic Johnson basketball up and down the sidewalk for two years before his family even had a hoop. He traces his path away from playing and toward broadcasting back to high school, where a heavy football culture in northeastern Ohio pushed him toward theater and improv instead — and explains why those improv skills, particularly the instinct to listen and react rather than follow a script, became foundational to his work in the booth. From there, Jake walks through his full career arc: a graduate-associate internship with the Magic out of Ohio State, years spent as a radio producer rather than an on-air voice, stints with the Detroit Pistons and back home in Cleveland, and finally returning to Orlando in 2019 before stepping into play-by-play full-time five years ago. The conversation goes deep on the mechanics of the job most fans never think about — why so many NBA radio broadcasters now call games solo rather than with a traditional color analyst (mostly economics: travel costs and the difficulty of finding a consistent 82-game partner), how he handles explaining a controversial call or a lengthy replay review to listeners with zero visual context, and the philosophy behind being a proud "homer" without ever misrepresenting what actually happened on the floor. Jake also shares some of his most memorable broadcasting moments, including producing Eastern Conference Finals broadcasts at just 25 years old, his nerve-wracking first fill-in play-by-play call alongside Pistons legend Rick Mahorn, and a game last season he calls his most fun ever: calling an NBA Cup quarterfinal win over Miami alongside his mentor and now Magic TV voice, Dante Marchitelli. The episode closes with a wide-ranging look at the Magic's current outlook — the surprisingly deep, multi-layered rivalry with the Miami Heat, the team's genuinely global fanbase built through Orlando's tourism industry, and why Jake believes a wide-open Eastern Conference, a young core still developing, and the arrival of new head coach Sean Sweeney could finally push Orlando past its recent first-round ceiling. 🏀 Subscribe to Hoopsology Podcast for in-depth NBA and WNBA conversations, insider interviews, and breaking news breakdowns you won't find anywhere else. 👉 Follow Jake Chapman: Twitter/Instagram @JakeChapmanOM 👉 Drop a comment: Do you think this is finally the Magic's breakout season? #OrlandoMagic #JakeChapman #NBA #Hoopsology #MagicBasketball Learn more about your ad choices. WNBA Title Contenders and Built on Defense: How the Valkyries Can Win the WNBA Championship with the Play-By-Play Voice of the Golden State Valkyries Kevin Danna
Kevin Danna, the radio voice of the Golden State Valkyries, joins Hoopsology for a deep, wide-ranging conversation covering the most unprecedented expansion story in recent sports memory, his own remarkable broadcasting journey, and where basketball's biggest leagues are headed next. Kevin opens with a personal favorite-memory tradition — crying as a kid after John Paxson's Game 6 shot sealed the Bulls' 1993 title over Phoenix, and being in the building for Golden State's first home playoff win in 13 years back in 2007 — before diving into just how historic the Valkyries' rise has been. He compares it to the Vegas Golden Knights' stunning inaugural Stanley Cup Final run, then walks through the franchise's full two-year build: a roster nobody outside the organization knew entering year one (undrafted French national teamer Janelle Salaün, overseas standout Carla Leite, in-and-out journeywoman Iliana Rupert), role players who broke out into All-Stars (Kayla Thornton, Veronica Burton), and the year-two additions — Gabby Williams and Kiah Stokes — that turned a surprise playoff team into a legitimate title contender now sitting at 28-11. The heart of the conversation digs into what's actually driving the winning: a suffocating, league-best defense under head coach Natalie Nakase that allows the fewest points per game in the WNBA by a wide margin, the league's slowest pace, and a three-point volume approach that bails them out even on cold shooting nights. Kevin breaks down the matchups the Valkyries most want to avoid in the playoffs (namely A'ja Wilson and a stacked Minnesota Lynx roster), before painting a vivid picture of the team's one-of-a-kind fanbase — a crowd almost entirely unconnected to Warriors season-ticket holders, decked out in homemade violet gear at "Valhalla" (their nickname for Chase Center), and known for something almost unheard of in sports: giving standing ovations after losses. From there, Kevin shares his own origin story — from student manager at Stanford alongside future NBA players, to building his resume calling everything from water polo to softball, to a chance Stanford pickup-basketball connection with Kirk Lacob that eventually led to the Santa Cruz Warriors job and, 15 years later, the Valkyries gig. He breaks down why the G League matters far more than casual fans realize — as a rehab site for stars like Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, a coaching pipeline, and a testing ground for rules the NBA and WNBA have since adopted — and shares his own game-prep process across the NBA, WNBA, and G League. The episode closes with Kevin's take on what's next for basketball globally, including his firsthand experience covering French professional hoops during Victor Wembanyama's pre-draft year, his curiosity about the developing NBA Europe league, and the WNBA's ambitious plan to reach 18 teams by 2030. 🏀 Subscribe to Hoopsology Podcast for in-depth NBA and WNBA conversations, insider interviews, and breaking news breakdowns you won't find anywhere else. 👉 Follow Kevin Danna: Twitter/X @Kevo408, Instagram @Dannamansj408 👉 Drop a comment: Is this Valkyries fanbase the best in the WNBA? #GoldenStateValkyries #WNBA #KevinDanna #Hoopsology #Valhalla Learn more about your ad choices. Why Geno Auriemma Coaches the Way He Does — It Started When He Was a Kid with Director of The Dynasty: UConn Huskies, Matthew Hamachek
Hoopsology sits down with Matthew Hamachek, co-director (alongside Erica Sashin) of Apple TV's new three-part docuseries "The Dynasty: UConn Huskies," premiering today, to go behind the scenes of one of the most anticipated sports documentaries of the year. The conversation opens with Hoopsology's signature tradition — asking guests for their favorite basketball memory — where Matthew shares a story about attending Washington Bullets games with his dad and a memorable superfan who used to yell "lousy, lousy, lousy" at the refs. From there, the two dig into the now-famous opening scene of the documentary, where Matthew asks Geno Auriemma to take off his squeaky shoes during their first-ever interview, and how that small, tense exchange set the tone for the entire filmmaking process — including the 15 hours of interviews Matthew and Erica conducted with one of the most guarded figures in college sports. Matthew opens up about the deeper story he uncovered about Geno's childhood — immigrating from Italy as a young boy, not speaking English, feeling like an outsider on the playground, and developing the belief that winning was the way to belong. That psychological throughline, Matthew explains, is the real engine behind Geno's coaching intensity decades later. The conversation goes deep on Paige Bueckers' arc across the series — her injury struggles, panic attacks, the pressure of being anointed UConn's savior, and an intense, largely unknown film-session confrontation with Geno after a loss to Tennessee that nearly broke their relationship before culminating in an emotional "I love you"/"I hate you" moment after winning the national championship. The two also discuss how Geno's coaching has had to evolve in the social media era — particularly with Paige Bueckers navigating fame as an influencer in a way previous UConn stars like Diana Taurasi and Rebecca Lobo never had to — and how Breanna Stewart, Sue Bird, and other alumni describe the uniquely brutal, "us against him" dynamic of playing for Geno. Matthew reflects on his broader documentary career (including "The Dynasty: New England Patriots," a Tiger Woods documentary, and the Amanda Knox story) and explains why sports documentaries, more than almost any other genre, hinge on earning a subject's trust before the real vulnerability comes through. This is a must-listen for any UConn fan, women's basketball fan, or documentary lover who wants the real story behind the cameras — straight from the person who spent a season living inside it. 🏀 Subscribe to Hoopsology Podcast for in-depth NBA and WNBA conversations, filmmaker and insider interviews, and breaking news breakdowns you won't find anywhere else. 👉 Watch "The Dynasty: UConn Huskies," now streaming on Apple TV — all three episodes available now. 👉 Drop a comment: What's the most surprising thing you learned about Geno Auriemma? #TheDynastyUConnHuskies #GenoAuriemma #PaigeBueckers #UConnHuskies #AppleTV #Hoopsology Learn more about your ad choices. Why Women's College Basketball Feels Like Family, with ESPN’s Sam Gore
ESPN play-by-play commentator Sam Gore joins the Hoopsology Podcast for a wide-ranging conversation about his two-decade career covering college basketball, tennis, volleyball, gymnastics, and more. Since joining ESPN in 2004, Gore has become one of the most trusted voices in women's college basketball — and in this episode, he opens up about the moments, people, and philosophy that shaped his career. Gore shares an unforgettable story about the late Pat Summitt, recalling the day his eight-year-old son David jumped a railing to meet the legendary Lady Vols coach — and the extraordinary kindness that followed. He compares Summitt's aura to icons like Billie Jean King and Dean Smith, and reflects on how that encounter still resonates with his son nearly two decades later. The conversation goes deep into the craft of broadcasting: how Gore builds storylines before he ever travels to a game, why he prioritizes human-interest storytelling over pure X's and O's, and how he built his on-air chemistry with WNBA legend and broadcast partner Tamika Catchings. Gore also recounts some of the chaos he's navigated live on air — from a tornado forcing an evacuation mid-broadcast at Auburn, to losing all audio in the final countdown before a March Madness broadcast. Gore also breaks down how much women's college basketball has changed, discussing the impact of NIL and the transfer portal on roster depth, why the sport's culture of connection and community keeps him coming back year after year, and what excites him most about the current state of the game heading into this season. Whether you're a broadcasting fan, a women's college basketball diehard, or just love a great behind-the-scenes sports story, this episode has something for you. 🏀 New Hoopsology Podcast episodes every week — subscribe for more honest, in-depth basketball conversations. 👇 Drop a comment: what's your favorite Pat Summitt story? ITL S6 E17: - Remembering Nellie Ball, WNBA Drama & the Kawhi Leonard Bombshell
Justin Goodrum, Matt Thomas, and Allan Muenzler are back with a packed episode of "In the Lab," covering a coaching legend's legacy, a WNBA season boiling over with controversy, and a fresh update on one of the NBA's biggest ongoing scandals. The guys open with some personal updates and a preview of upcoming interviews — including a 45-minute conversation with former "Around the Horn" host Tony Reali and ESPN college basketball commentator Sam Gore — before honoring the legacy of Don Nelson, who passed away recently. They break down Nelson's Hall of Fame coaching career, his all-time wins record, his pioneering "Nellie Ball" style that helped shape the modern guard-heavy NBA, his role in drafting Stephen Curry, and a broader conversation about whether today's shorter coaching leashes mean we'll ever see a tenure like his again. From there, the show dives into the WNBA's latest firestorm. The hosts break down the flagrant foul from Chicago Sky's DJ Carrington on Sophie Cunningham, the social media fallout that followed, and play Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White's raw, emotional press conference defending her team. They also cover the rescinded technical foul involving Caitlin Clark before shifting into a pointed, opinionated discussion of WNBA leadership — including reaction to Front Office Sports reporter Colin Salao's take on what the league needs in its next commissioner, a breakdown of the publicity stunt surrounding Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White's threats to enter the WNBA draft, and renewed discussion of the Paige Bueckers–Angel Reese betting clip the league's own social account briefly promoted. Worth noting: this segment includes the hosts' own strong, candid opinions on some politically charged storylines around the league this season — presented as their take, not a neutral breakdown. The episode wraps with a pivot to the NBA, where the crew reacts to Pablo Torre's continued reporting on the Kawhi Leonard–Clippers sponsorship investigation, debating what consequences could be coming for Leonard and owner Steve Ballmer. They close with shoutouts to rookie standout Olivia Miles and the Golden State Valkyries' historic first season. 🏀 Subscribe to Hoopsology Podcast for weekly deep dives, insider interviews, and unfiltered NBA and WNBA conversations you won't find anywhere else. 👉 Got a topic you want covered? Is Cathy Engelbert's Time as WNBA Commissioner Running Out? With Front Office Sports' Colin Salao
The WNBA has never been more popular — or more chaotic behind the scenes. In this episode, Hoopsology welcomes back Front Office Sports reporter Colin Salao to unpack the business stories shaping the league that aren't showing up in the box scores. Colin starts by breaking down the exhaustion players and front offices are feeling around the ongoing Sophie Cunningham/Indiana Fever storyline, and what it reveals about a deeper communication gap between the league office and its players. That leads into a deep dive on Commissioner Cathy Engelbert's uncertain future — including Colin's on-the-record reporting from All-Star weekend, Caitlin Clark's and A'ja Wilson's telling comments about their relationship with the commissioner, and why Colin believes the league may be searching for a new leader once the current CBA cycle stabilizes. Colin makes the case for what kind of person the WNBA actually needs next, drawing comparisons to Dana White's early UFC playbook and Sue Bird's respected role with USA Basketball. The conversation shifts to the business of expansion — the Golden State Valkyries' historic first-year success, how the Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire are positioning themselves to compete early, and what Cathy Engelbert's globalization plans (international games, a possible USA vs. France exhibition) could mean for the league's next growth phase. Colin also shares his original reporting on skyrocketing season ticket prices, including a Mystics season-ticket holder facing a 48% price jump, and the surprising (and disputed) reason some fans were given for the increase. From there, the episode covers the WNBA's own social media team accidentally promoting a prohibited prop bet between Paige Bueckers and Angel Reese, why Athletes Unlimited is pausing its 2027 season, the mysterious and still-undefined "Project B" league, and Jonquel Jones's emotional press conference moment after a hot-mic controversy at All-Star weekend. The episode closes with a fun hypothetical: could a "Drive to Survive"-style documentary actually work for the WNBA — and would players ever be vulnerable enough to make it happen? Two Rebuilds, One City: The Wizards and Mystics Are Both Rising with Jarrett Spence
Washington, DC basketball is having a moment, and Hoopsology sat down with Wizards and Mystics beat reporter Jared Spence (WizardsAndMysticsLead) to break down why both teams are suddenly impossible to ignore. On the Mystics side, Jared discusses how a franchise that started the season under a cloud of GM uncertainty has exceeded expectations at 13-12 heading into the All-Star break, currently sitting eighth in a crowded playoff race. He breaks down how head coach Sydney Johnson has developed the youngest roster in league history around a defense-first identity — the Mystics rank top of the league in rebounding and points allowed — while young star Georgia Amoore continues working her way back from injury. Jared also makes the case for Shakira Austin as a legitimate Defensive Player of the Year candidate and paints a picture of what makes Care First Arena's intimate, family-first atmosphere so special. Olivia Miles Isn't Just ROY — She's in the MVP Conversation with CBS Sports' Isabel Gonzalez
The WNBA's rookie class continues to steal headlines, and Hoopsology welcomes back CBS Sports' Isabel Gonzalez to break down everything happening heading into the second half of the season. Isabel shares her latest rookie rankings and offers a deep, insider look at the players reshaping the league. The conversation centers on Olivia Miles, Isabel's top-ranked rookie since day one, and the case for legitimate MVP buzz after she became the fastest player in WNBA history to reach 400 points, 100 rebounds, and 100 assists. Isabel also breaks down Flau'jae Johnson's energy and leadership on a young Seattle Storm team, Azzi Fudd's underrated defensive growth with the Dallas Wings, and other rookies to watch down the stretch, including Sonia Citron, Kiki Iriafen, and Gabriela Jaquez. The discussion widens to explore how the WNBA's rookie spotlight has evolved since Caitlin Clark's arrival, the unique mental and emotional challenges these young stars face transitioning from college stardom to WNBA role players, and insights Isabel gathered directly from players like Lauren Betts on adjusting to a completely new level of competition. From Skepticism to Sunburned Jerseys: Philly's LeBron Obsession with On SI’s Austin Krell
The Philadelphia 76ers just had one of the most stunning offseasons in NBA history, and Hoopsology sat down with Sixers beat writer Austin Crowell (Sports Illustrated) to break down exactly how it all came together. In this episode, Austin walks through the chain of events that led to LeBron James and Jaylen Brown both landing in Philadelphia — from the Celtics' surprising willingness to move Brown, to the behind-the-scenes factors that shaped LeBron's free agency decision. He shares insight into new president of basketball operations Bob Myers' vision for the roster, the fit questions surrounding Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, and Joel Embiid, and why frontcourt depth behind Embiid could be the team's biggest concern heading into the season. The conversation also dives deep into fan culture, with Austin offering a rare inside look at what Philadelphia sports fandom is really like — separating myth from reality, explaining what earns a player the city's love (and what doesn't), and describing the borderline surreal reaction across the city since LeBron's signing, from renamed radio stations to a fan who sunburned "James 23" into his back. Finally, Austin discusses the pressure facing this newly stacked roster, how LeBron's arrival compares to other iconic Philly sports moments like Bryce Harper and Saquon Barkley, and what a season with championship-or-bust expectations could look like for the Sixers. 🏀 Subscribe to Hoopsology Podcast for in-depth NBA conversations, insider interviews, and breaking news breakdowns you won't find anywhere else. 👉 Follow Austin Crowell: Sports Illustrated (SI.com) and on Twitter/X @NBACorral 👉 Drop a comment: Do you think this Sixers roster can win a championship? #Sixers #Philadelphia76ers #LeBronJames #JaylenBrown #Hoopsology #NBA Learn more about your ad choices. The Knicks Ended a 53-Year Championship Drought — Here's What It Really Felt Like with NY Sports’ Dexter Henry
The New York Knicks finally did it — ending a 53-year championship drought — and Hoopsology sat down with New York Post Sports anchor and "New York's Got Game" host Dexter Henry to capture what this moment truly means for the city and its fans. In this episode, Dexter takes us inside the emotional whirlwind of the night the Knicks clinched the title, sharing a deeply personal story about thinking of his late parents and the memories tied to a lifetime of Knicks fandom. He and hosts Justin Goodrum and Alan Munzer dig into why the Knicks feel different from every other New York sports team, why this fanbase is uniquely tied to the identity of the city, and how the drought made this championship hit even harder for longtime fans. The conversation goes beyond the basketball to explore the socioeconomics of sports fandom — from insane finals ticket prices (one fan turned down nearly $20,000 to keep his seats) to the growing gap between die-hard fans and the corporate crowd now filling arenas. Dexter also shares an unforgettable story from a Pistons game in Detroit that reframed how he thinks about access to live sports. Finally, Dexter gives a firsthand account of the historic championship parade — the first in Knicks franchise history — describing the electric energy of nearly three million fans packed into the Canyon of Heroes, Knicks legends riding through the streets, and a city that came to a complete standstill in celebration. Moses Malone vs Dr. J: The Untold Story of Two NBA Legends with author Luke Epplin
In this episode of the Hoopsology Podcast, we’re joined by author Luke Epplin to discuss his new book “Moses and the Doctor: Two Men, One Championship, and the Birth of Modern Basketball.” This conversation dives deep into the origins of modern basketball, tracing the game’s evolution back to the ABA and the revolutionary impact of Julius “Dr. J” Erving. Long before Michael Jordan became a global icon, Dr. J helped redefine the sport—bringing playground creativity, above-the-rim athleticism, and artistic expression into professional basketball. We also explore the overlooked legacy of Moses Malone, a 3-time NBA MVP whose dominance and workmanlike style often gets overshadowed in today’s conversations. Why is Malone one of the most underrated players in NBA history? And how did his personality shape his legacy compared to the more marketable Dr. J? The episode also breaks down: The ABA vs NBA and how innovation shaped today’s game The cultural importance of streetball and player creativity How Dr. J laid the foundation for Michael Jordan and future stars Why today’s players lack the “mystique” of past legends The role of the 1980s Philadelphia 76ers in NBA history If you’re a fan of basketball history, NBA storytelling, and deep analysis, this is a must-watch conversation that connects the past to today’s game.
