The Fear of Cantering: What's Really Going On in Your Head? | 100th Episode Special!
Does the thought of cantering make your stomach flip, your shoulders tense up or your brain immediately start imagining everything that could go wrong?Perhaps you’re perfectly happy walking and trotting, but the moment someone suggests a canter, your confidence disappears. Maybe you used to love cantering but, after a fall, a confidence knock or time away from riding, it suddenly feels terrifying.First things first: you are not a rubbish rider, and you are certainly not the only one who feels this way.In this special 100th episode of the podcast, we're talking about the fear of cantering in horses and riding, why it happens, how it can show up in your body and behaviour, and what you can start doing to rebuild your confidence in the saddle.Because riding anxiety isn't always about what your horse might do. Sometimes it's about what your mind is telling you could happen. In this episode, we'll explore:🐴 Why cantering can feel so much scarier than walking or trotting.🧠 How previous falls, frightening experiences and negative thought patterns can affect your riding confidence.💭 The sneaky ways fear shows up, from overthinking and avoidance to tension in the saddle and constantly anticipating the worst.❤️ Why simply telling yourself to “just relax” or “be brave” doesn't always work.✨ Practical tips to help you manage riding anxiety, develop a better relationship with your fear and start rebuilding confidence at your own pace.🌱 How working on your mindset and nervous system can support you in becoming a calmer, more confident rider.Whether you're scared to canter in the arena, worried about cantering out hacking, struggling after a riding accident or frustrated because your brain knows you're capable but your body seems to have other ideas, this episode is for you.You don't have to force yourself to be fearless. You can learn to understand your fear, build trust in yourself and your horse, and take the next steps towards riding with more confidence and enjoyment.🎉 It's my 100th episode and I'm celebrating with a special listener-only competition! To say thank you for being part of this podcast journey, I'm giving ONE lucky listener the chance to win a 1:1 Breakthrough Session with me, worth £75.This is a special one-off opportunity that I don't normally offer, so if you've ever wanted some personalised support with your riding confidence or mindset, you'll want to listen right to the end of this episode.I'll reveal the competition entry details at the end, so make sure you listen all the way through to find out how to enter!Ready to work on your riding confidence?🐎 Explore 1:1 horsemanship and mindset coaching: info@idyllwildhorsemanship.com📲 Follow along on Instagram: @thehorsemanshipandmindsetcoachRemember: your horsemanship starts with you! Why I became a hypnotherapist for equestrians.
In this weeks episode I'm sharing WHY I decided to become a hypnotherapist who specialises in helping equestrians.I share a little of my own struggles with confidence, and why I pivoted from a career in horse training to helping train humans brains instead.I hope this episode helps provide a little insight into how important this work is for me, but also restore a little hope and faith in your own journey with confidence and horses. To submit questions for future episodes or to apply to work with me 1:1 this autumn, email me at info@idyllwildhorsemanship, or pop me a DM on any of my socials at @thehorsemanshipandmindsetcoach.
Its time to stop seeking validation. How to trust yourself instead!
Do you find yourself constantly looking for reassurance, approval or validation from other people?Whether it’s in your relationships, your horsemanship, your work or simply the decisions you make every day, the need for external validation can quietly chip away at your confidence and self-trust.In this episode, we’re getting into why we seek validation, where the need for approval comes from, how people pleasing and overthinking can keep it going, and what you can actually do to start trusting yourself instead.Confidence isn’t about never caring what anyone thinks. It’s about being able to hear other people’s opinions without handing them the steering wheel. If you’re ready to stop second-guessing yourself and build genuine confidence, self-trust and emotional resilience, this is for you!I hope it's helpful!Ready to work on this properly? If you want support changing the patterns underneath your confidence struggles, you can apply to work 1:1 with me via email at info@idyllwildhorsemanship.com, or slide into my DMS on the socials, @thehorsemanshipandmindsetcoach.
Your Worst-Case Scenario Happened. Now What? 5 Steps to Rebuild Horse Riding Confidence After a Setback.
What happens when the thing you've been worrying about with your horse actually happens?A dog chases you on a hack. Your horse spooks badly. You fall off. Your horse bolts. Something happens that genuinely scares you, and suddenly the confidence you've worked so hard to build feels like it's disappeared overnight. But here's the thing:A frightening experience doesn't automatically erase your progress! In this episode, I talk about what to do when you've experienced a genuine setback with your horse and you're now struggling with fear, anxiety, overthinking, or a loss of confidence.Using a recent real-life client situation as inspiration, I explore how both horse and rider can rebuild confidence after a frightening experience, without minimising what happened and without allowing one event to become a prediction of everything that will happen in the future. In this episode, you'll learn:🐴 Why acknowledging what happened is more helpful than trying to immediately “get over it”🐴 How to separate the actual event from the catastrophic story your brain may be creating around it🐴 Why a setback doesn't mean you've lost all of your previous progress🐴 How to rebuild your horse's confidence after a frightening experience🐴 Why you should rebuild safety before demanding confidence🐴 The difference between being appropriately cautious and constantly rehearsing worst-case scenarios🐴 How to help your own nervous system — and your horse's — come back into a place where learning is possible🐴 Why true riding confidence isn't about believing that nothing bad will ever happen🐴 The mindset shift from “What if something goes wrong?” to “I trust myself to handle what happens.”If you've lost confidence after a riding setback...Whether you've had a fall, experienced a bolting horse, had a frightening hack, struggled with your horse's spooking, or simply found yourself becoming increasingly anxious about riding, you are not necessarily back at square one.Sometimes you don't need to start again. You need to process what happened, rebuild safety and create a new experience....and you don't have to figure that out by yourself!Work with Me 1:1 this autumnIf you're ready to rebuild your confidence, change the mindset that's keeping you stuck and create a calmer, more connected relationship with your horse, you can work with me 1:1 this autumn.📩 Email: info@idyllwildhorsemanship.comOr send me a DM on the socials to book a free consultation call and chat about what's happening for you and whether 1:1 coaching is the right fit!Your horsemanship starts with you.Lets go!!

What If It Goes RIGHT? How to Trade Catastrophe for Curiosity With Your Horse
Do you ever find yourself worrying about what might happen with your horse before anything has actually happened? What if he spooks? What if he naps? What if I can't stop him? What if I fall off? What if everyone thinks I'm a rubbish rider? What if this goes horribly wrong? If your brain has a habit of jumping straight from uncertainty to worst-case scenario, this episode is for you.In this episode of the Horsemanship & Mindset Podcast, we're talking about catastrophising, riding anxiety, horse riding confidence and one simple but powerful alternative:curiosity.Catastrophising is a common pattern of anxious thinking where the mind jumps ahead to the worst possible outcome. For riders, this can show up as constant “what if?” thoughts, overthinking horse behaviour, anticipating a spook or bolt, worrying about losing control, or mentally replaying everything that could go wrong before you've even got on.The problem isn't that your brain is trying to protect you, its when you start treating the story your brain has created as though it is *already happening.*Instead of trying to force yourself to “think positively”, this episode explores how to become curious rather than catastrophic. You'll learn five simple reframes you can use immediately with your horse:“What if something goes wrong?” → “What is actually happening right now?”“What if it goes wrong?” → “I wonder what will happen?”“I have to know what will happen.” → “I can handle information as it arrives.”“This means something is wrong.” → “What else could this mean?”“I need to make this go perfectly.” → “What can I learn from this?”This isn't about ignoring genuine risk, pretending you're never nervous or forcing yourself to do things you're not ready for, it's about learning to separate what is happening from what you fear might happen. That distinction can make a huge difference to your horse riding confidence, your nervous system and the way you communicate with your horse. In this episode, we explore:What catastrophising actually isWhy your brain jumps to worst-case scenariosWhy “what if?” thinking can feel like preparationHow anxiety and overthinking can affect your experience with your horseThe difference between fear and useful informationWhy curiosity is such a powerful mindset for equestriansHow to become more present when you're ridingFive practical reframes for anxious thoughtsHow to stop turning every ride into a test of your abilityWhy confidence isn't about knowing nothing will go wrongHow to build confidence by learning that you can respond when things don't go according to planYour takeaway for this week:Don't aim for a perfect ride! Aim for a curious ride.Come and find meIf you're a horse rider who wants to feel more confident, calm and connected, (without having to become a completely different person first)come and follow me on the socials, @thehorsemanshipandmindsetcoachYou'll find more practical content around horse riding confidence, rider mindset, anxiety, nervous system regulation, horsemanship and building a better relationship with your horse. You can also head to the link in my bio to find my resources and apply to work with me. “What If They Think I’m a Terrible Rider?” How to Stop Worrying About What Other People Think!!!
Do you worry about people watching you ride?Maybe you’re scared they think you’re a bad rider. Maybe you worry they’re judging your decisions, laughing at you, talking about you afterwards or thinking you’re doing the wrong thing with your horse.Or perhaps you find yourself constantly needing reassurance that you’re doing the “right” thing. In this episode, we’re talking about fear of judgement, low confidence, people-pleasing, validation and self-trust in equestrianism, and why worrying about other people’s opinions can have such a huge impact on your confidence around horses. We’ll explore:🐴 Why humans are wired to care about social approval🐴 Why being watched can trigger anxiety and self-consciousness🐴 The difference between seeking advice and seeking validation🐴 How the reassurance cycle can actually make confidence worse🐴 The “mind-reading” trap and assuming you know what other people think🐴 Why you probably aren't being watched as closely as you think🐴 How to decide whose opinions actually deserve your attention🐴 Why confidence isn't about nobody judging you🐴 Practical ways to build self-trust and become less dependent on reassurance🐴 How to redirect your attention away from the audience and back towards your horse🐴 Reframes to help you stop worrying about being judgedOne of the biggest mindset shifts in this episode is this:Confidence isn't knowing everyone approves of you.Confidence is knowing they might not and trusting yourself anyway! If you're ready to stop overthinking every ride, build genuine confidence and feel more secure in your decisions with your horse, I’m currently taking on 1:1 horsemanship and mindset coaching clients before the summer ends.Work with me 1:1: link in bio on the socials ~ @thehorsemanshipandmindsetcoach or email me at info@idyllwildhorsemanship.comAnd if you know another rider who constantly worries about what people think, send them this episode! When the Horse World Feels Heavy: Protecting Your Confidence With Compassion
Recent tragedies within the equestrian community have understandably left many riders feeling anxious about getting back out competing. In this episode, I explore how to acknowledge difficult events with compassion and respect, while protecting your own confidence and mindset. You'll learn why our brains naturally become more cautious after hearing upsetting news, how social media can amplify fear, and practical ways to refocus on your own horse, your own preparation and your own journey. This episode is not about ignoring risk or pretending difficult things don't happen. It's about finding the balance between staying informed, honouring those affected, and making decisions from preparation and trust rather than fear.In this episode, you'll discover:Why recent events can make competition suddenly feel more frighteningThe psychology behind why our brains overestimate risk after emotional storiesHow to stay compassionate without carrying everyone else's fearPractical ways to calm your nervous system before competingWhy confidence isn't the absence of risk, it's trusting your preparation and partnershipIf you've been feeling more hesitant about competing, riding away from home, or stepping back into the arena after hearing difficult news, this conversation is for you.If you enjoyed this episode and/or found it helpful, I'd be so grateful if you could follow the podcast, leave a rating and review, and share it with another equestrian who might need to hear it.You can find more confidence and mindset support here:Instagram: @thehorsemanshipandmindsetcoachTikTok: @thehorsemanshipandmindsetcoachWebsite: www.idyllwildhorsemanship.comEmail: info@idyllwildhorsemanship.comI'd love to hear your thoughts or ideas for future episodes. The Confidence Journey Nobody Sees Behind the Social Media Posts
Have you ever looked at another rider confidently cantering across a field, smiling from ear to ear, and thought:"That could never be me."This week's episode is a powerful and honest conversation with one of my previous clients who, just 18 months ago, had completely lost her confidence with her horse, Pegs. At the time, riding felt overwhelming. Fear had taken over. She had stopped enjoying her horse, given up riding Pegs altogether, and couldn't imagine ever feeling relaxed and confident in the saddle again.Yet today? She's regularly out hacking, cantering through open fields with her horse and dog, enjoying adventures together, sharing her journey on social media, and has even started experimenting with jumping again...something she never imagined she'd want to do!In this episode, we talk openly about:✓ What it really feels like to lose your confidence around horses✓ The fears, worries and self-doubt that kept her feeling stuck✓ How confidence issues affected her relationship with her horse✓ The moment she realised something needed to change✓ What she'd tried before that wasn't working✓ The biggest mindset shifts that helped her move forward✓ The first signs that her confidence was returning✓ The reality behind the transformation people now see online✓ What feels possible for her today that once felt impossible✓ Her advice for riders who are currently struggling with confidenceIf you've been feeling frustrated, fearful, stuck, or wondering whether you'll ever enjoy your horse again, this conversation will remind you that change is possible, because confidence isn't something you're born with...it's something you can build for yourself.Connect with me and learn more about confidence coaching, hypnotherapy and mindset support for horse riders by messaging me on the socials at @thehorsemanshipandmindsetcoach or emailing me at info@idyllwildhorsemanship.comTo follow along with Valentina and Pegs adventures together, find her on instagram or Tiktok at @thatspottyhorse or to find out more about Val's photography, head to @reinfocusmedia If this episode resonates with you, please share it with a fellow horse person and leave a review...it helps more riders discover the support they need!See you next week!

Why You Can Ride Brilliantly One Day… And Feel Terrified the Next!
Why does your riding confidence feel strong one day and disappear the next? Many equestrians experience this frustrating cycle, a brilliant ride followed by unexpected nerves, tension, or self-doubt the next time they get on their horse. In this episode, I (an equestrian mindset coach and clinical hypnotherapist) explore why confidence with horses isn’t linear and why these fluctuations are far more normal than riders realise. You’ll learn how the nervous system influences riding anxiety, why fear can return even after progress, and how to work with your body rather than fighting against it.This episode offers a compassionate and practical perspective to help riders rebuild trust in themselves and create more consistent confidence in the saddle. In this episode you’ll learn:Why riding confidence can fluctuate from one ride to the nextHow the nervous system influences fear around horsesWhy feeling nervous again doesn’t mean you’re back to square oneThe hidden factors that affect rider confidenceHow to support your nervous system and rebuild trust while ridingIf you enjoyed this episodeShare it with another horse gal, subscribe so you never miss an episode, and leaving a review helps more equestrians find the podcast! Why Getting Off Your Horse Can Be the Smartest Thing You Do!
Is getting off your horse really “letting them win”? (spoiler alert- no- it isn't!!!)In this episode, I explore one of the most outdated beliefs still circulating in the horse world, that riders should never get off during a difficult situation. After hearing a client describe being told to stay on while her horse was rearing, I break down why this advice can be not only unhelpful, but potentially dangerous. You’ll learn why horses aren’t trying to “win,” how nervous system overwhelm affects both horse and rider, and why sometimes stepping off your horse can actually be the most responsible and compassionate choice you can make. This episode explores a more modern approach to horsemanship, one built on communication, safety, and understanding rather than dominance and control. In this episode you’ll learn:Why the idea of “not letting the horse win” is outdatedWhat horses are actually communicating during escalated behaviours like rearingHow rider fear and nervous system activation affects the horseWhy staying below threshold creates safer outcomesHow getting off can sometimes be the most intelligent horsemanship decisionIf you enjoyed this episode:Share it with a fellow rider, subscribe so you don’t miss future episodes, and leaving a review helps more equestrians find this podcast.Questions or comments?
