Songs for Summer series in Psalms, Episode 3
Song of Rest at Night - Psalm 4In a culture filled with constant noise, anxiety, and restlessness nights, this psalm quietens our souls. It is written as an evening prayer, in the midst of trouble and opposition. The psalmchallenges us to stop seeking satisfaction in passing things and instead find lasting peace in God’s presence. Because the Lord cares for his people, we can lie down and sleep in safety.David Knowles
Songs for Summer series in Psalms, Episode 2
Song of the True King - Psalm 2Our world may seem chaotic, controlled by authoritarian leaders, shaped by arrogant voices online, and people determined on breaking free from God’s rule. This psalm provides a different story - the Lord in heaven laughs, having already installed Jesus as the true King. It calls us as God’s people not to fear, but to find our refuge in him.David Campbell
Songs for Summer series in Psalms, Episode 1
Song of Two Roads - Psalm 1Psalm 1 presents a clear contrast between two ways to live. One path belongs to the person who delights in God’s law and meditates on it continually, becoming resilient and fruitful. The other path follows the counsel of the wicked and ultimately leads to ruin. This psalm challenges us to consider: which road are we travelling, and where are our lives are truly rooted?David Campbell
Episode 8 of Deuteronomy: Loving a Faithful God
In chapter 34 we read of Moses death. Moses does not enter the promised land due to disobeying God (despite pleading with God in chapter 3 v23-25) but God has provided another leader in Joshua to take the people forward – they are not to be discouraged or afraid as the Lord will go before them and never leave or forsake them. (chapter 31 v 8). We too can be encouraged by this (link to Hebrews 13 v5)David Campbell
Isaiah: Hope for a Broken World, Episode 4
Hope is brought to the people each time they are told of God’s judgement. Hope is presented alongside judgement initially focussed on Israel and the nations surrounding it. It is given concrete expression in the picture of the return from an exile that hadn’t as yet happened. It is however a message of hope that will stretch them far beyond their perspectives of an earthly future beyond their time and into the scope of God’s eternal future, and so becomes our story of hope.David Knowles
BC Summer Holiday Update
A little information about summer holiday and new episodes in the works.
Isaiah: Hope for a Broken World, Episode 3
The Solution God Brings:Isaiah repeatedly brings the people to consider their helplessness before the world they live in and the God they profess to worship. His own temple experience was instrumental in helping Isaiah see his own sinfulness and need for atonement before a holy God. The solution is brought to the people using the picture of a servant. The people ought to have been God’s servant to the nations, but now they needed a servant who would deliver them. This servant however was not to restore the nation to political security but to restore them to the heart and holiness of God.David Knowles
Episode 7 of Deuteronomy: Loving a Faithful God
The Holy Spirit’s Help - we can’t do it alone - 24 MayIn our series on Deuteronomy, we read about the promise that God made to take his people into the promised land. They were given a fresh start and the hope of God dwelling among them. However, Moses prophesies that they will not be able to live wholeheartedly for God and will not remain in the land. They could not do it.This is Pentecost Sunday and we are now so privileged to have the Holy Spirit’s help. We have God with us and His help to live wholeheartedly in a way the Israelites did not and could not do.Deuteronomy Chapter 31 v24 – 29 and Acts Chapter 2 v1 – 21Ewen McDonald
Isaiah: Hope for a Broken World, Episode 2
The Problem Diagnosed:Like many of the Old Testament prophets, Isaiah takes time to point out in clear and at times very graphic detail the sins that so plagued the nation. This was undoubtedly an important first step in their journey. We can perhaps today be a little guilty of not taking time to reflect on the reality of sin and its impact on personal and national life, but also crucially on the way it brings sorrow to the heart of God.David Knowles
Episode 6 of Deuteronomy: Loving a Faithful God
Blessings and Curses- picture language: Chapter 11 v26 – 32Moses has outlined blessings and curses linked to the Israelites obedience/disobedience. The people had choices but as they turned against God there would be consequences. This reminds us that God loved his chosen people and would have compassion on the Israelites when they returned to him, and loved him with all their heart and soul. For us today, God is waiting for us to come to him with all our heart and soul.Chapter 11 v 26-32 (ref Chapters 27 & 28)Challum Finbow (Not Colin)
Isaiah: Hope for a Broken World, Episode 1
The prophecy of Isaiah can be described as God’s story in miniature and is remarkable in that the message God gave to Isaiah would not be bound by the limits of his time or his own life. The first half of the book has a historical setting during the time the nation was under the threat of Assyria. However the second half of the book seems to be focused on a period 150 years further on as the people are experiencing exile in Babylon, a nation that as Isaiah writes is not a threat to anyone. The wonderful genius of the prophet is however to communicate God’s message without reference to the limits of time. So as we progress through the book we will be given constant reminders of God’s final great plan of redemption in the new heavens and the new earth. The scope of the book is breathtaking, it spans all of human history from creation to the consummation of the world. He also touches on most (if not all) of the great themes of the bible that together tell us of a God who made this world, who redeemed this world and who one day will restore it to its position as His final new Kingdom. As you read the book you will come across repeated references to key themes: The Sovereignty of God The Holy one of Israel The Servant The Messiah The Remnant The City

Deuteronomy in Context/Overview:The Israelites are about to enter the promised land. BC Podcast Episode 9, Sermon on the Mount series
Building on the RockThe sermon ends as it began, being a follower of Jesus means living wholeheartedly for Jesus, where every area of our life is His. We perhaps prefer a softer option with choices about what we devote to Jesus and how we express our devotion. But those who build their lives on the rock are those whose trust is only and always in Jesus. The only other option has all the stability and surety of soft sand.Matthew 7 v 24 -29Tim Ellis
BC Podcast Episode 8, Sermon on the Mount Series
Practice makes PerfectFrom this point on Jesus teaching is concerned with practice. We will read the words “bear” “do” “perform” “put into practice”. The choice in each case is stark only ever two options to follow Jesus on the narrow road or the crowd that walks the broad road. There is no opportunity to compromise.Matthew 7 v 13 – 23
BC Podcast Episode 8 Sermon on the Mount Series
Other PeopleIt would be nice if everyone was like me, we might think, but of course never say out loud. Our attitude can make us too quick to judge others, without thinking about our own faults. The so called “golden rule” is the default standard in all our relationships after all our Father in heaven is a constant giver of good gifts.Matthew 7 v 1-12Simon Turner
Episode 7 of the Sermon on the Mount Series
Do Not be AnxiousEasier said than done we might say, life today is complicated, fast moving and full of stress. The advertising industry feeds our minds with ideals that define life today. Jesus by contrast singles out the basics of life as examples and tells us that our priority is to seek first above all else the Kingdom of God and his righteousness.Matthew 6 v 25 – 34David Campbell
Episode 6, Sermon on the Mount Series
Where is my heart? It has been said that we would only really know how much we love Jesus if all we had in life was Jesus. In other words, the cares of life and the deceitfulness of wealth so often become for us idols that dominate and take over our hearts such that our love and service for God becomes secondary.Matthew 6 v 19 -24Andrew Fairfield
Episode 5: Sermon on the Mount series
Lord Teach meIt seems it was always good to be seen to be good, and the best ways of achieving this was noisy giving, loud praying and gloomy fasting. Jesus says the Kingdom values are different and based on secrecy at least before men.Matthew 6:1-18
Episode 4, Sermon on the Mount Series
What We Say and Do Really Matters - Matthew 5:33-48Colin MacNeillThe Pharisees of Jesus day were fond of invoking God’s name as if to say God was right there with them in doing so they would use convoluted statements that ultimately meant little. Jesus'teaching is to be simple and sincere in what we say. Turning what we do to the emphasis of generous grace and boundless love.
