iAlign #74 - How Many Backup Laptops Is Too Many
Send us Fan MailI'm filming this on my potato of an old laptop because I just poured a full glass of water onto my new one while moving a blanket, in a remote town in Chile about four hours south of Santiago by bus. The backup was basically the one thing I planned for, and I planned for it on two questions, how likely is this and how big is the consequence if it happens. That same filter is why I stopped where I stopped, because a third and fourth backup laptop would guarantee I could keep working and it would also be silly. If you're an engineer or a systems minded guy like me, the overthinking is genuinely fun and it's probably part of your superpower at work, you're just spending it on whether you need a fourth laptop. One of my clients said it better than I have, which is that I can do anything, but I can't do everything.Stop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
iAlign #73 - Nothing You Start Will Pay Off For Weeks
Send us Fan MailEverything in life has a three to four week lead time minimum, and the moment I actually accepted that about my own work is when I started making faster progress. Two things happen once you believe it. You have to filter much harder, because you can't run many things for many weeks all at the same time, and you have to stop validating results and start validating effort, because the results aren't allowed to exist yet. Then you zoom out and the year is only twelve months long, so in one domain that's maybe twelve big things, maybe six. That isn't many spaces to fill, which is why what goes in them has to be chosen really specifically.Stop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
iAlign #72 - The Decision Took Two Seconds And Two Years
Send us Fan MailI spent two years deciding whether to apply to medical school, and I didn't spend them thinking. I volunteered in hospice care at 22, I shadowed surgeons in the fields I found interesting, and I studied for the MCAT while I was working as a research scientist. Then it was pouring in the Bay Area on the morning of the test and I drove in wearing a red and white Aloha shirt with an eight foot soft top in the back in case the rain let up afterward, and the second I pressed submit on the last question I thought, ah, not for me. That was it, really, that was it. The decision only took two seconds because it had already taken two years, and I have quite literally never once asked myself what if I'd been a doctor.Stop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
iAlign #71 - You Will Choose Wrong. Start Anyway.
Send us Fan MailThe first real step I took out of my job at a lab building genetic sequencing technology was buying an $18,000 2018 Ram ProMaster City van that I'd eventually build out and live in. What made that hard wasn't the van, it was the thousand small questions sitting behind it, where's the dealership, how much can I afford, do I build it out myself, how do I tell my boss, how do I bring this up to my girlfriend. If I'd wavered a couple of days on each one of those I'd still be sitting in that same moment from years ago. The pushback I always get is, what if I prioritize wrong and take the wrong action, and my answer is that you will, and that's good, because choosing exactly right the first time would just be luck. The point isn't to choose correctly, it's to take the first actions that give you the evidence to know what the next one should be.Stop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
iAlign #70 - Nine Thousand Hours Of Practice You Skipped
Send us Fan MailI have a hot take on relationships, which is that a lot of people are running into partners and friends whose emotional maturity is nowhere near what they were hoping for, and I don't think that's only about comparison and endless options. I read some research saying people average around two and a half hours a day scrolling, which is roughly 900 hours a year, so over ten years that's 9,000 hours of your life paused. Practice is what makes anybody good at anything, and all those paused hours were hours you would have spent around other people. So now we've got a lot of 25 and 30 and 35 year olds walking around with less real life experience than earlier generations had at that age. I want to be careful with my words here, I'm not saying worse human beings, I'm saying less capable ones, and honestly that's a little scary.Stop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
iAlign #69 - The Pit In Your Stomach Is Not Regression
Send us Fan MailA week or two into every January I feel like absolute shit about myself, no matter how well things are actually going, and I've given up trying to work out why. What matters is that the pit in my stomach coming back doesn't mean I've lost any of the ground I gained, because the emotions themselves mostly never go away, you just get better at handling them. There were a couple of days this past holiday season I could have handled better, and I can name exactly what I'd change, saying yes to fewer things and sorting out before I travel where I'll work out and where I'll shop for food. That turns the low into something I'm almost looking forward to testing next year. The people you admire for their discipline feel the same anxiety and embarrassment you do, it just moves them less.Stop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
iAlign #68 - Split Your Attention, Lose The Only Good Part
Send us Fan MailIt was nearly midnight on a Friday in a small coastal surf town in Chile, I had a couple more hours of work I wanted to do, and the voice in my head said, it's late, put a movie on while you work. I grabbed the camera right then because that voice sounds like relief and it isn't. If I do that I don't focus on either one, and what I'm giving away is the middle part of focus, which is the part that actually feels good. Gardening is the example I keep coming back to. It's moving dirt from one hole to another, completely unglamorous, and it's enjoyable purely because you're focused on it. Split my attention and I won't enjoy the movie and I won't finish the project, I'll just get restlessness.Stop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
iAlign #67 - The Catch 22 Keeping You Isolated And Behind
Send us Fan MailMen get assessed by what they create and how they provide, and at the end of January, when everybody is falling off their goals, you feel it more than any other time of year. There's a whole modern line saying that isn't true anymore, and the intention behind it is good, but it lands as gaslighting, because the same people who say open up and tell me how you feel get uncomfortable the second you do and shut it down. So you're told to your face that your worth isn't your output while being measured on exactly that underneath. My own position probably annoys both sides of that argument. Being less isolated and more emotionally expressive is one of the most effective tools there is for becoming more productive and more capable, which is what the world is going to judge you on regardless.Stop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
iAlign #66 - In the End, YOU Always Deliver the Final Blow To Yourself
Send us Fan MailI was lying on the floor of my apartment like a corpse. I'd just pulled from savings to cover rent, my relationship was ending, I wasn't sleeping, and the business was in one of its first real lows, and the voice in my head said, what an opportunity, and I laughed and said fuck you. That voice is only there because I spent years training it. For the first 25 years of my life I ran on shame and self-criticism instead, and shame does get you moving sometimes, which is exactly why people trust it, and then it hands you straight back to the scrolling and the overeating. If I'd been talking to myself that way on that carpet I would have quit, no doubt in my mind. Nothing external knocks you out. The last blow is always your own.Stop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
iAlign #65 - Keeping Every Promise Except the Ones to Yourself
Send us Fan MailRight after university I'd go to the bar with my colleagues after work pretty regularly, while telling myself I was getting back into soccer shape and mountaineering shape. A year into that job I'd firmly established the habit of putting their happy hour ahead of my own health, and I got overweight. A client of mine said this better than I ever have. He told me he's 30 years old and can't honor a commitment to himself, that he'll do anything not to let other people down but the minute it's himself he doesn't care, and this is a guy who graduated with honors and then spent ten years working for what everyone else wanted. What actually changed it for me wasn't willpower. It was finding a way to say no to the happy hour invite that I could feel okay saying.Stop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
iAlign #64 - Planning Next Year From the Hot Tub
Send us Fan MailThere's no such thing as a clean slate. I could start over in a new place with new people and I'd still show up carrying my current body and my current mind. The version of this I'm least proud of is a New Year's Eve where I sat in a hot tub with a beer, overweight and not liking how I looked, mentally listing all the changes I was going to make next year. What I was actually doing was quietly forgetting every commitment I hadn't kept that year, then promising myself those same ones again with some new ones stacked on top. The ten extra pounds, the permanently distracted focus, the self-image that had started attacking me instead of supporting me, that was the slate I was starting from.Stop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
iAlign #63 - The Test You Set by Going Quiet
Send us Fan MailI get lonely over the holidays sometimes, no matter how many people around me love me. One year I was having a rough stretch, not feeling appreciated or checked in on, and I watched some rage bait video on Instagram saying other people never reach out first, so just test them by going quiet for a week. I took that on, and two things happened. Because I was already looking for the negative, everyone who didn't text me counted and everyone who did somehow didn't, and I isolated myself further than I already was. The end of the year is chaos for everybody, so expecting to be checked on without any effort of my own wasn't loneliness, it was entitlement.Stop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
iAlign #62 - The Trap Door Ambitious Engineers Fall Through
Send us Fan MailI was doing bioinformatics work for a biotech group with a big analysis due by the end of the year, and I was badly behind on it. Then they asked me to write something up for a scientific presentation, which was far less work, and I poured myself into that instead and let the main project sit. It did two things for me and neither one was honest. It let me act overwhelmed, like I had too much on my plate, when the truth was I was behind because I hadn't done enough work, and it let the noise of the holidays quietly swallow the thing I'd actually committed to. Nobody came after me for it, which is the trap. I just started the next year weeks behind, catching up instead of building.Stop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
iAlign #61 - Sacrifice the Exciting Day to Actually Have One
Send us Fan MailI'd wake up with a list, exercise, ten hours of work, meditate, surf, and then I'd blink and it was 5:30 and I'd done almost none of it. That would turn into me lying in bed at one in the morning as a grown adult, playing the old Miniclip games I played when I was twelve, and the thing is my face in those moments wasn't happy, it was numb. What I eventually worked out is that all of it comes from chasing the perfect, exciting day, which is exactly what pushes you toward the cheapest stimulation available. So now I do the opposite on purpose. I went to a restaurant yesterday with my phone off for the whole day, sat there watching the guys behind the counter make burritos, ended up in a great conversation with a woman whose name I never asked, and I'd take that over another TV episode every time.Stop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
iAlign #60 - The Books You Tell People You're Reading
Send us Fan MailI used to lie to people about the books I was reading, not outright, just by naming books I'd started and never finished whenever someone asked what I did with my weekend. What was really going on is that I'd overcommitted to so many things that I never had the time to finish any of them. There was a Saturday in September, a beautiful crisp fall day with the swell starting to roll in, and I spent the whole thing going back and forth between the TV, a video game and my phone, and by five my eyes were bloodshot and I was disappointed in myself. Sitting with that, I realized I wasn't disappointed about the day, I was disappointed about the year. That's really what this one is about, that how you end your year gets decided in September, not on January first.Stop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
iAlign #59 - Trying Really Hard Is Not a System
Send us Fan MailI was sitting in a power systems class when the email came through with my organic chemistry score, and I'm pretty sure it started with a two. I ran across campus in flip flops to ask the TA if there'd been a mistake. There hadn't. The thing is I had studied hard, in the only way I knew how. Go at one thing intensely, drop everything else, get overwhelmed, blow up, repeat. That feels like effort. It just doesn't produce anything, and it gets worst in Q4 when everything stacks at once.Stop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
iAlign #58 - Sick in Bed and Still Feeling Behind
Send us Fan MailMy New Year's kiss a couple years ago was a bottle of NyQuil. I was sick in bed on January 1st and my mind was still telling me I was lazy, I was behind, I should be doing something. That's the trap for ambitious people. In the moment you most need your head on your side, it turns on you instead. This one gets into why resilience is mostly preparation rather than willpower, and what shame-based accountability actually costs.Stop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
iAlign #57 - You Said You'd Scroll Less Over the Holidays
Send us Fan MailI've tracked my drinking for a few years now. Last year I averaged around 15 a month, this year it's closer to five, and every Thanksgiving and Christmas it roughly doubles and leaves me foggy for a week afterward. That's not really a story about alcohol. It's about noticing. You can't change a pattern you've never measured, and telling yourself you'll do better over the holidays without collecting a single data point doesn't do anything.Stop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
iAlign #56 - You Feel Behind Because Your Tabs Are Open
Send us Fan MailI started a blog in university called Trying to Tech and never made it past post number four. It sat there for years as one more open tab, which is really what this one is about. Every project you start and abandon takes up memory whether you're working on it or not. You don't feel behind because you're doing too little. You feel behind because you're carrying twenty of these, and most of them were optional to begin with.Stop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
iAlign #55 - Your Best Focus Isn't at the Coffee Shop
Send us Fan MailWhen I lived in Santa Cruz there was a route I'd start driving without ever deciding to. Down to the water, past Pleasure Point, over to Cat & Cloud to work, because I was supposedly trying to be in a more productive environment. I'd sit there and act like I was working while my actual output sat on the floor. One afternoon like that is harmless. Three months of it and you hit December wondering where the year went.Stop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
iAlign #54 - Building in the Shadows Until You're Worthy
Send us Fan MailThe Count of Monte Cristo was one of my favorite books growing up and I think it did some damage. I loved the idea of disappearing into the shadows for years and coming back finished, and I treated that as the honorable way to do things. It isn't. Doing everything the hard way is usually just avoidance masked as morality. I had a client at a satellite company who was about to start a second degree to qualify for a team he'd never once spoken to. He had the conversation instead, and the bar turned out to be far lower than he thought.Stop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
iAlign #53 - A Free Afternoon in the Lab, Spent Scrolling
Send us Fan MailI had a lab, a full set of equipment, and afternoons I could spend on whatever experiment I wanted. I spent them scrolling the Instagram of a girl I knew in high school, telling myself I'd start at one, then two, then three thirty. By the time someone asked about happy hour I'd say yes just to stop thinking about the afternoon I'd wasted. Two things were actually going on. I was scared of being the guy who couldn't get it to work, and I'd said yes to so much that I couldn't tell what to do next.Stop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
iAlign #52 - Not Moving Fast Enough to Trust Yourself
Send us Fan MailI was standing with my dad around Christmas a few years ago thinking, I wish I was moving faster, I wish I was more proud of myself, I don't even know if I'm on the right track. What bothered me most wasn't being behind. It was that I wasn't taking the actions that would have told me either way. #36 - Rowing Across Oceans and Redirecting Your Life with Roz Savage
Send us Fan MailRoz Savage changed her life in her thirties, when through an environment epiphany, she completely shifted her direction from her current role in management consulting to become a world class adventurer. As you and I spent our days commuting to class or the office, she was rowing across the oceans for many months at a time, completely alone. She has completed the Big 3 oceans - the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian, and consequently become a powerful voice both for the environment and personal development. Appearing on numerous TV channels, talk shows, TED talks, and with 3 published books, the most recent of which, The Gifts of Solitude, being relevant to our situation in the pandemic, she has plenty of wonderful insight. In this conversation, I wanted to hear about her current adventure, where she has taken on a PhD. From this, we talk about her perspective on changing course in life, identifying, even if just through awareness, the areas of our life we want to redirect. She explains these thoughts with examples from her own life, and shares, what I believe to be a very inspiring message of hope - that our futures and the future of our world, are inextricably linked to our internal states of being. I had a lot of fun listening to Roz and her stories and I know you will too. #35 - Obesity, Injury, and Ultra-Running with Philip Godwin
Send us Fan MailI was introduced to Philip Godwin by Zach Smith, a former podcast guest who hiked the Pacific Crest Trail. Like Zach, Philip has found himself crossing the finish line of endurance events, doing several runs from 30 to 50 and even 100 miles at a time. In this conversation, however, before we dive into his path with running, we touch on the beginning of that journey. Dealing with obesity, a disabling injury, and tons of negative self-talk in highschool into college, Philip had to deal with some real personal challenges, mental and physical, before journeying into long-distance running. Likewise we talk about his first 100 mile run, which he used to raise nearly twenty-thousand dollars to start a fund in the name of a friend of his that passed away. If you feel like you’re in a rut, or even just moving a bit slower than normal, I think this conversation might help you turn that around. I loved hearing Philip’s take and I know you will too, enjoy. -----Podcast IG: https://www.instagram.com/seekingauthenticitypodcast/Podcast Website: https://seekingauthenticity.buzzsprout.com/©Flint MitchellStop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
#34 - Recreating Yourself in Paradise with Forensic Biomechanist Mike Sinnott
Send us Fan MailMike Sinnott is a forensic biomechanist, determining the true causes of accidents, and the human and mechanical factors that may have contributed to it. In this conversation we talk a bit about how he got into the field and why he loves it, including a really insane story from his graduate school years and the work ethic required at a young age to pursue a field that didn’t really exist yet in industry. After that, however we talk about a transformation he had to undergo, when he and his wife left their all-too comfortable setting of 8 years in Toronto to move to Hawaii. Mike lets me ask about some really solid topics, including effectively the crisis of identity you go through when making large career switches in life and the difficulty of building yourself back up after those periods of change. This is wonderful chat that I found quite impactful in my own life so I hope you enjoy it.Check out Mike's podcast here: https://www.instagram.com/conventionot_podcast/-----Podcast IG: https://www.instagram.com/seekingauthenticitypodcast/Podcast Website: https://seekingauthenticity.buzzsprout.com/©Flint MitchellStop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC
#33 - Leaving College, Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, and Embracing Every Day as a New Adventure with Zach Smith
Send us Fan MailZach Smith hiked the entirety of the Pacific Crest Trail, a backpacking trail that extends over 2600 miles from the Mexican border to Canadian border, trekking through deserts and high mountain ranges. He used this trek to raise thousands of dollars of support for Youth Assisting Youth, a non-profit charity aimed at providing mentors to at-risk youth. In this conversation we talk about his experience leaving college to work in construction for a year as he created new intentions, his decision to embark on the Pacific Crest Trail with nearly no prior backpacking experience, and some of the moments of solitude, joy, excitement, and even melancholy that he passed through while hiking it. Likewise we talk about mentorship, creating a mindset of determination and grit, and how the trip changed his perspective to take advantage of each day and the purpose that can be derived from it instead of looking towards finish lines far off in the future. I really appreciated listening to Zach and I think you will too, enjoy.Check out Youth Assisting Youth here:https://youthassistingyouth.comAnd another interview of Zach from Youth Assisting Youth here:https://youthassistingyouth.com/journey-youth-mental-health/-----Podcast IG: https://www.instagram.com/seekingauthenticitypodcast/Podcast Website: https://seekingauthenticity.buzzsprout.com/©Flint MitchellStop being the smart guy with all the potential who's stuck scrolling.Click here to fill out the 30 second application, then book a call directly on my calendar.Stoked,Flint---Spotify Podcasts Apple PodcastsLinks:Instagram: @ialign.flintmitchellPersonal Website and Book: https://www.flintmitchell.comTikTok @flint.mitchellYoutube @ialignEmail: [email protected]©iAlign, LLC

#28 - Terror Management and Using Death to Take Responsibility for Life With Greg Akinbiyi
Send us Fan MailIn this episode, I talk with Greg Akinbiyi. Greg is a former Duke football player, businessman and consultant, who I had the pleasure of connecting with through Ellen Leanse, another guest of this podcast on episode 2. Here, we talk about the journey he’s been on with a book he’s writing with the working title ‘Leaders Die First.’ Likewise we cover a wide range of topics I love to talk about, including the current societal discussion about what it means to be a man and how it relates to what it means to be human, about the frameworks we use to define success, and about using death as a framework for life, showing us the ways we might want to change our actions and perspectives on what is truly under our control in this moment. Send us Fan MailIn this episode I talk with my longtime friend and future roommate Phillip White! Phil and I grew up in the Bay Area, California in the same classrooms, soccer teams, and friend groups. After going to different high schools, we ended up at the same university 1500 miles from home. Though we grew up with similar demeanors, we had fairly different experiences at college and Phil ended up leaving school two years later. That hard work is what led to the reflective, dedicated, and strong perspective he has now.
