There's No Research Saying Kids Must Learn to Read by Age 5

2026-09-177:28

For decades, parents have been told that learning to read by age five is essential — and if a child isn't there yet, panic sets in. But that timeline was never based on child development research. It came from systemic pressure: benchmarks, testing, and the assumption that starting earlier means more time to intervene. Multiple studies comparing early readers to later readers show no long-term academic advantage for kids who start formal reading instruction earlier. Children who begin later catch up, show similar comprehension and fluency, and experience no lasting academic harm. There is no single "right" age to learn to read — but there is a right sequence of skills that has to come first. Want the deeper dive on brain development and reading readiness? Why Mississippi's Reading Scores Skyrocketed (And What It Means for Your Child)

2026-08-208:07

What if your child's struggle to read has nothing to do with them — and everything to do with how they're being taught? In this episode, I'm breaking down the "Mississippi Miracle" — how a state that used to rank near the bottom in reading scores turned things around and posted some of the biggest reading gains in the country. It wasn't luck, more homework, or a new gadget. It was a shift to explicit, systematic phonics instruction rooted in Structured Literacy. I'll walk you through exactly what Mississippi changed, why so many classrooms still aren't teaching reading this way, and — most importantly — how you can bring these same research-backed principles into your home, no matter where your child is starting from (struggling, brand new to reading, losing confidence, or ready to move ahead). You'll learn: ✔️ What actually happened in Mississippi's reading turnaround ✔️ Why phonemic awareness is the #1 predictor of reading success ✔️ How explicit, systematic phonics instruction works (and why "exposure" isn't enough) ✔️ How high-frequency words should be taught in context, not memorized in isolation ✔️ What a research-backed, at-home reading routine actually looks like I also share a bit about how these exact principles are built into my Level 1 and Level 2 Skill-Based Literacy Curriculum, and how you can join the waitlist for Level 3. Why Kids Who Play More Often Become Better Readers

2026-03-1115:41

Most parents think learning to read starts with letters, phonics worksheets, or handwriting practice. But neuroscience tells a very different story.Long before children recognize letters or blend sounds, their brains are building the foundational systems that make reading and writing possible. In this episode, we explore why unstructured play is one of the most powerful foundations for literacy development and how movement, sensory experiences, imagination, and social play build the brain pathways children rely on for reading success. You’ll learn:• Why climbing, balancing, and outdoor play strengthen attention and reading fluency• How sensory input helps children sit still, listen to sounds, and write letters later• Why imaginative play builds language and comprehension skills• The connection between social play, self-regulation, and reading stamina• How parents can support both play-based brain development AND structured literacyIf you’ve ever worried your child might be falling behind in reading, this conversation will help you understand what their brain actually needs first.Play isn’t wasted time. Play is the pre-reading curriculum.Small wins start early. Big confidence lasts a lifetime. If you're ready to support your child with brain-aligned literacy tools, you can explore my resources:K3 Homeschool Foundations Resources: Science of Reading Simplified Ecourse 5 Foundations of Reading Ecourse Skill-Based Literacy Curriculum (start here if you're not sure which level to choose)

Early Signs of Reading Struggles in Kids & What Parents Can Do

2026-02-1714:10

Reading doesn’t begin with letters. It begins with language. In this episode, I’m walking you through:• The early signs of reading struggles in toddlers and young children• Why letter practice alone often doesn’t work • What phonological awareness actually is (in simple parent terms)• How to strengthen pre-reading skills through play• What to do if your child forgets letter sounds daily• The difference between memorizing and mastering reading skillsMany parents think:“If I just read more books, it’ll click.”“If we practice flashcards more consistently, they’ll remember.”“Maybe my child just isn’t a strong reader.”But often, the real issue isn’t intelligence or effort. It’s foundation. When we strengthen phonological awareness — rhyming, syllables, sound awareness, vocabulary — letters start to stick naturally.Phonological Awareness ResourcesFREE Phonological Awareness MatK3 Homeschool Foundations Resources: Science of Reading Simplified Ecourse 5 Foundations of Reading Ecourse Skill-Based Literacy Curriculum (start here if you're not sure which level to choose)

Why Your Child Hates Reading (It’s Not Their Fault)

2025-10-2013:42

Most kids don’t hate books — they hate the way reading is taught. In this video, I unpack how our current education system (and even well-meaning parents) can accidentally make reading feel like a chore instead of a joy. We’ll explore what actually causes kids to disconnect from reading — and how to reignite a love for books at home.If we truly wanted kids to hate reading, we’d do exactly what most schools do: skip phonics, rely on guessing strategies, push leveled readers, and treat reading like test prep. But when we teach with intention — through phonics, decodable readers, and connection — we build confident readers who love learning.✨ You’ll learn: ✅ The 7 ways we accidentally teach kids to hate reading ✅ Why guessing and leveled readers create long-term reading struggles ✅ The connection between literacy and freedom ✅ Simple shifts you can make today to raise a child who loves to read🎧 Listen to the full podcast episode: [insert link] 📘 Explore my Letters & Sounds Curriculum → [insert link] 🕵️‍♀️ Try The Letter Mysteries course → [insert link]👇 Subscribe to the channel for more videos on:Early literacy and phonicsHomeschool foundationsRaising confident, curious learnersK3 Homeschool Foundations Resources: Science of Reading Simplified Ecourse 5 Foundations of Reading Ecourse Skill-Based Literacy Curriculum (start here if you're not sure which level to choose)

Why School Isn’t the Same as Learning (and What Parents Can Do About It)

2025-10-1223:13

In this episode, I unpack a big question: What does true learning actually look like, and does it line up with what we see in classrooms today?I explore the difference between schooling, education, and learning, and why those words shouldn’t be used interchangeably. You’ll hear:* Why most classrooms are structured around compliance, not curiosity* How extrinsic rewards (like grades and stickers) quietly kill motivation* What true learning looks like when it’s driven by curiosity, connection, and developmental readiness* The balance between explicit instruction and play-based exploration* How parents can protect their child’s love of learning—no matter where they go to schoolIf you’ve ever questioned whether traditional schooling is really teaching your child to think, this episode will change the way you see education forever.👉 Rediscover what real learning looks like—in the classroom and at home.K3 Homeschool Foundations Resources: Science of Reading Simplified Ecourse 5 Foundations of Reading Ecourse Skill-Based Literacy Curriculum (start here if you're not sure which level to choose)

2025-09-1520:30

We’ll compare the U.S. education model with Finland’s world-renowned approach, breaking down differences in:Preschool & early academics — why later is betterRecess & homework — why less creates more learningTesting & assessments — what actually helps kids (and what doesn’t)Teacher training & autonomy — why respect mattersStudent well-being & class sizes — the overlooked key to successIf you’ve ever questioned whether pushing letters and numbers at age 4 is really the best path, this episode will give you the research (and the reassurance) you need.💡 Parents — you can take back your child’s education and set them up for long-term success without the stress and burnout.K3 Homeschool Foundations Resources: Science of Reading Simplified Ecourse 5 Foundations of Reading Ecourse Skill-Based Literacy Curriculum (start here if you're not sure which level to choose)

How Schools Were Designed to Control You: The History of American Education

2025-09-0323:54

What if our education system was never designed to help us truly learn? In this video, I uncover the hidden history of public education, from the Prussian model to reformers like Horace Mann, and the influence of industrialists like Rockefeller, Carnegie, and Ford. The truth is: government schools were designed to create obedient citizens and compliant workers, not independent thinkers. We were never taught how to learn, just how to memorize and obey. But there’s hope. Parents, homeschooling families, and alternative education movements are starting a revolution, one that puts curiosity, creativity, and true learning back into the hands of children.👉 If you’re questioning the system, this video is for you.✨ Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and share if you believe education needs a revolution.K3 Homeschool Foundations Resources: Science of Reading Simplified Ecourse 5 Foundations of Reading Ecourse Skill-Based Literacy Curriculum (start here if you're not sure which level to choose)
