That Physical Culture Podcast
Renee Walker & Justine Rigby
Join Renee and Justine for a candid, cheeky and totally heartfelt look at Physical Culture in Australia, celebrating the women, the wins and the wonderfully unhinged moments that make Physie what it is.We come from a position of being absolute novices (well actually, we're moving into Intermediate in 2026, if you want to be technical!), so if you're looking for an expert viewpoint of Physie, you're in the wrong place! This podcast has zero affiliation with BJP Physie and/or our club. It's a manifestation of many hundreds of conversations we've had about physie over the past three years. Our...

Mental As Anything - Episode 19
Send us Fan MailZone Performance Day is looming, which means Renee and Justine have reached that delightful point of the physie calendar where you've done the training, you know the syllabus, the performance wear is ready… and now your own brain would like to become involved. And unfortunately, the brain can be mental as anything. So this fortnight, we've called in professional help.Joining us is sports psychologist Gemma Illescas from Always Flying Psychology, who works with athletes on the mental side of performance: confidence, focus, competition nerves, pressure, emotional regulation and what happens when things don't quite go to plan. And we have QUESTIONS.Why can you feel great at class and then completely unravel the minute there's a judge sitting in front of you? What happens when you start comparing yourself to everyone else? Can you actually think yourself into being confident? How do you stop one mistake from destroying the rest of your performance? And is it okay to admit that yes, we'd quite like to WIN THE BLOODY THING?Gemma also helps us unpack something Renee has been wrestling with this year: the difference between being pessimistic and realistic, particularly when you know you haven't had the preparation you wanted. Rather than trying to plaster over those thoughts with positive vibes only, we talk about how to reframe them into something more constructive and a whole lot less destructive. We get into motivation, self-talk, comparison, nerves and disappointment, and how to focus on the things you can actually control when so much of competitive physie, including what the judges think of you, is completely out of your hands.Because maybe the goal isn't to walk onto the floor without nerves, doubts or negative thoughts.Maybe it's learning how to walk out there with them and perform anyway. With Zone staring us directly in the face, the timing of this conversation couldn't be better. Will Renee and Justine actually put Gemma's advice into practice? We'll report back. 😂Instinctive HealthEvidence-based care focused on the connection between your gut, mind, and your overall wellbeing.Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Interclubs & An APDA Reality Check - Episode 18
Send us Fan MailThis fortnight, the girls are deep in interclub season, and apparently Renee’s definition of “I’m definitely not competing” is now “give me five minutes while I put my performance wear on.”We kick things off with not one but two BJP interclubs, starting with our own club hosting an event where Renee had every intention of remaining safely on the sidelines. That lasted until she found herself changed, numbered and ready to go. Because of course she did. Then it was off to Taree Great Lakes Physie, where Justine casually went and WON her section. Yes, FIRST PLACE. Which finally provides Renee with the hard evidence required to prove the argument she has been making all year: JUSTINE IS ACTUALLY GOOD AT PHYSIE. Jussy can no longer hide behind the Andy-to-Renee’s-Hamish narrative. We have receipts. And a first-place medal. There’s also a little product review as the girls put Purty Underwear through the very scientific and highly prestigious That Physical Culture Podcast testing process. Thoughts are shared. Opinions are obviously had.And then… APDA happened. The girls head along to their first APDA event at the Central Coast Physie and Dance Interclub, and what an introduction it was. The atmosphere, the performances, the talent, the spectacle... we absolutely LOVED it.However. There is a small matter we need to address. You may recall us making some rather confident statements about BJP being the hardest code.We would now like to formally revise those comments. 😂After watching APDA competitors absolutely SEND IT on the floor, we have some thoughts. Some apologies. And quite possibly an entirely new understanding of what “hard” looks like.Consider the record officially amended. It’s interclub season, everyone’s competitive, Renee apparently can’t attend an event without entering it, Justine is out there WINNING things, and the girls have discovered yet another corner of physie to obsess over.Just another completely normal fortnight at That Physical Culture Podcast. 💃🏆Instinctive HealthEvidence-based care focused on the connection between your gut, mind, and your overall wellbeing.Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Juzz Rigby, Uncensored - Episode 17
Send us Fan MailThis fortnight on That Physical Culture Podcast, we’re flipping the script. After countless episodes of Justine insisting she’s the Andy to Renee’s Hamish, we’ve decided it’s finally time to let her have the microphone… uninterrupted. (Well, mostly. Old habits die hard.)This episode is all about getting to know the woman behind the one-liners, the media powerhouse, and the self-proclaimed sidekick. Renee puts Justine in the hot seat to chat about everything from her dream physie goals and what keeps her coming back year after year, to the parts of the sport she’d happily leave behind if she were handed the rule book. The girls also dive into Justine’s honest thoughts on this wonderfully weird, wildly addictive sport we’ve all somehow become obsessed with. Expect plenty of laughs, a few surprises, and the usual amount of oversharing. To wrap things up, we’ve got another Poddy Pick for the physie fam. This fortnight we’re shining a light on the incredible Back to the Mac – Fleetwood Mac Experience. If you’re a Fleetwood Mac fan (or simply appreciate brilliant live music), do yourself a favour and check them out.Until next time… keep pointing those toes, recruiting your friends, and remember… it’s only a cult if you’re not in it. 💃Instinctive HealthEvidence-based care focused on the connection between your gut, mind, and your overall wellbeing.Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. There’s a strange energy in the studio without her emotional support co-host, but the show must go on.Renee talks through her latest “Physie Anywhere” photos, as well as the late-onset online banter with the BJP Powers-That-Be.Then, in news that has sent Renee into a full-blown journalistic conniption, she reveals she’s made contact with none other than THE Lisa Wilkinson. Yes, that Lisa Wilkinson. Australian media royalty. Poise. Presentation. Power suits. The woman who basically raised half of us through breakfast television. To celebrate, the girls are launching a little Physie Book Club and reading Wilkinson’s incredible book, The Titantic Story of Evelyn, which took Wilkinson three years to complete. Then we move into the main event: our chat with Jake from Bangor Georges River Physie in EP Physie. Or as we now know him, The Short King of the Physie Floor. At just 12 years old, Jake is one of the very few boys doing physie in Australia, and honestly? He’s an absolute superstar. Introducing Stevo The Seagull - Episode 10
Send us Fan MailThis week on That Physical Culture Podcast, the girls are back with a full life and physie update… and things are, as always, slightly unhinged. We kick things off with an injury update on Justine’s sprained kneecap — yes, apparently that’s a thing — and where she’s at with recovery (physically, emotionally, spiritually… all of it). From there, we dive into some family developments, with Justine’s sister officially joining physie this year. A wholesome moment… slightly overshadowed by the fact that their mum has raised concerns about the language being thrown around and is now lobbying for a swear jar to be introduced.Honestly? Fair.We also meet the newest and arguably most important member of the podcast:Stevo the Judgey Seagull. He’s observant. He’s critical. He’s seen things. And he will be weighing in accordingly. To round things out, the girls chat all things BJP National Finals, what’s coming up, what to watch for, and what listeners can expect in the next couple of episodes as we head into a very big part of the physie calendar.Injury updates, family chaos, unsolicited feedback from seagulls and a touch of Nationals hype.Standard.Instinctive HealthEvidence-based care focused on the connection between your gut, mind, and your overall wellbeing.Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Let's get technical, technical - Episode 9

Because pushing your body is one thing… keeping it functioning is another. We also chat through Ash’s journey as a professional dancer, what she’s learnt along the way, and how those experiences have shaped the way she now teaches and supports dancers through the Avant Garde Method. It’s equal parts education, inspiration, and a gentle reality check on how we’re all treating our bodies. If you’ve ever:questioned your turnout, forced a leg lift that had no business being that high, or ignored a niggle hoping it would magically disappear… This episode is for you.Instinctive HealthEvidence-based care focused on the connection between your gut, mind, and your overall wellbeing.Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Eeedith Parsons Physical Culture with Nikki Gayner - Episode 7
Send us Fan MailDelulu on the Fire Horse & Eeeedith UnpackedThe wheels? Off.The vibes? Questionable. The delusion? At an all-time high.In this episode of That Physical Culture Podcast, Renee and Justine come in hot after a couple of weeks where, quite frankly, the Fire Horse has the girls feeling completely delulu. There’s a frank (and mildly unhinged) chat about where things are actually at right now. Think less “graceful physie pose” and more holding on for dear life at a galloping pace in the saddle. The girls unpack the week that was, the work that maybe was (or wasn’t), and the general state of play as the season starts to creep in.Then, in a sharp left turn into something slightly more structured (but not much), we dive into the world of Edith Parsons Physie.Or as it’s more affectionately known in this episode:“Eeeedith… no Renee… EEEEDITH.”We explore what makes EP noice, different, unusual, and what sets it apart from the physie systems you might be more familiar with. Expect opinions, observations, and a few moments of “oh… that’s actually very interesting.”If you’ve ever felt personally victimised by your own motivation levels, questioned your life choices mid-routine, or wondered what’s going on over in EP land, this one’s for you.Saddle up. 🐎ps. International Women's Day 2026 - BONUS EPISODE
Send us Fan MailToday, we’re releasing a special bonus episode of That Physical Culture Podcast to mark International Women’s Day.Renee and Justine take a moment to reflect on what International Women’s Day means to them and how its themes of strength, resilience and community show up so clearly in the world of physical culture. Physie is, after all, a rare space in sport where women have built, led and sustained something special for generations. From competition floors to teaching studios, physie has long been a place where women support women, challenge themselves, and celebrate what their bodies can do. In this conversation, Renee and Justine explore why that matters now more than ever. They’re also joined by Erin Kemp, Head of Practice at major sponsor of the pod, Instinctive Health, for a fascinating discussion on women’s health from the inside out.Erin walks us through the critical role of gut health and why it sits at the centre of so many aspects of wellbeing. The conversation covers everything from the realities of living with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), to the powerful connection between the gut and mental health, and why the gut is often considered the home base of the immune system. It’s a thoughtful and empowering conversation about understanding our bodies better, supporting our health, and recognising the incredible strength of women both inside and outside the physie world.A perfect listen for International Women’s Day!Instinctive HealthEvidence-based care focused on the connection between your gut, mind, and your overall wellbeing.Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. History, Herstory - Episode 5
Send us Fan MailThis week on That Physical Culture Podcast, we go back. Way back. Not to Nationals. Not to the first syllabus you remember. Not even to Australia. We begin in Copenhagen, 1845, in a world where physical training wasn’t about competition or choreography, but about nation-building, discipline and survival. In this episode, we trace the remarkable evolution of Physical Culture from its European roots to the distinctly Australian sport we know and love today. At the centre of that story is Christian Bjelke-Petersen, the Danish-born youngster whose influence would shape generations of physie dancers, whether they realise it or not.We explore how structured Nordic gymnastics systems, steeped in military preparedness and national identity, travelled across continents and found fertile ground in a young Australia still forming its own identity. We unpack Christian’s role within the Australian Department of Defence, his European study tours, the controversies, the politics, and the vision that laid the foundation for what would become the Bjelke-Petersen School of Physical Culture (BJP).Alongside that story, we follow the development of the Edith Parsons School of Physical Culture, and how the two codes helped cement physie as a uniquely Australian tradition. But perhaps the most fascinating part of this journey is how something born in a man’s world — shaped by military training, discipline and national strength — evolved into one of Australia’s most enduring female-dominated sports. A space led by women, sustained by women, and passed down through generations. From European gymnasiums to Australian competition stages, this episode connects the historical dots and asks a bigger question:How did we get here?If you love physie, history, or simply understanding the roots of the culture you’re part of, this one is for you.Because physie didn’t just happen. It was built. Physie, decoded. - Episode 3
Send us Fan MailIn this episode of That Physical Culture Podcast, Renee dusts off her journalism degree and goes full investigative mode. After one too many conversations about “which physie is better”, she decided to do what any reasonable person would do… conduct a deep dive into the multiple physie codes. Who are they? What makes them different? And are they really as different as we all claim?Renee unpacks the origins, philosophies and stylistic nuances of the major physie associations, looking at everything from musicality and choreography to judging criteria and culture. Burns. BJP. EP. APDA. No one is safe. But here’s where it gets interesting.Once you strip back the branding, the loyalties and the generational pride, the similarities start to shine through. The love of movement. The commitment to discipline. The musical obsession. The shared language only physie people understand. The mums. The friendships. The lifelong pull back to the stage.Yes, there are differences. Some stylistic, some structural, some cultural. But at their core? They’re all built on the same DNA.This episode is less about declaring a winner and more about recognising that while the codes may differ, the heart of physie is remarkably the same.If you’ve ever wondered how we ended up with so many versions of the same sport, or if you’ve ever been fiercely loyal to “your” association, this one’s for you.Renee's poddy pick is Kester Black Matte Lipstick in Lip Service xIf you’re looking for official guidance or technical instruction, this isn’t your place. But if you love physie and the culture that comes with it, you’re very much in the right room.🎧 Follow That Physical Culture Podcast wherever you listen📱 Follow us on Instagram for updates: @that_physical_culture_podcastProudly brought to you by Instinctive HealthFind out more at www.instinctivehealth.com.au

Thank you for the music - Episode 1
Send us Fan MailWelcome to the first official episode of That Physical Culture Podcast! We kick things off by talking about the huge response to our debut episode. Honestly, we’re still a bit shook (in the best way). Thank you for listening, sharing, and sliding into our DMs with thoughts, feelings, and strong opinions. From there, we dive headfirst into one of the most important elements of physie: the music. We unpack why music matters so much in the world of physie. Not just as background noise, but as a major tone-setter for the year. The music shapes performances, and lives rent-free in our heads for months on end.We break down this year’s music selections for BJP 2026 Ladies and Seniors (who, let’s be real, always get the good songs). We chat through the tracks we love, the ones we feel very “meh” about, and the songs we personally wish we could dance to, if we were in charge of the playlist (absolute power, zero responsibility). To wrap things up, we share our individual physie goals for the year ahead. Some serious, some aspirational, all very us.If you love physie, love music, or just enjoy honest conversations with a bit of spice, this one’s for you.If you’re looking for official guidance or technical instruction, this isn’t your place.
