The Sword of the Spirit, Part 2
In Part 2, we continue exploring the “Sword of the Spirit” from Ephesians 6:17. What makes the Word of God such a powerful weapon for the believer? Scripture is inspired, inerrant, preserved, authoritative, and sufficient. As we examine these five characteristics, we are reminded why we can trust God’s Word and faithfully use it as we stand firm in the spiritual battle.
The Sword of the Spirit, Part 1
An old expression says, “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.” Many believe the saying has its roots in the philosophy of Kautilya, a man believed to have lived in modern-day India during the late fourth and early third centuries BC. According to Indian tradition, he was the brilliant adviser who helped Chandragupta Maurya overthrow the Nanda dynasty and establish the Mauryan Empire around 321 BC. Kautilya’s axiom was a part of his “circle of kings” theory. It held that a neighboring kingdom was a natural enemy, while the kingdom beyond it—your neighbor’s enemy—was a natural ally.Perhaps Kautilya’s observation can teach us something about spiritual warfare. A Christian’s standing in Christ makes him or her a naturally enemy of Satan. Because the Evil One hates Christ, he naturally hates all of Christ’s children.
The Strength for Our Spiritual War, Part 2
Spiritual warfare has existed since the beginning of time. The Genesis’ account of the Garden of Eden reveals such to be true. Satanic deception played a part in Adam and Eve’s first sin (Genesis 3:1-5). Even God’s first gospel pronouncement contained an allusion to spiritual warfare. In announcing the coming of Jesus, the Lord told Satan, I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel” (Genesis 3:15). While Jesus’ death on the cross of Calvary would be a means through which Jesus would bruise the head of Satan, one should not forget that Satan bruised Jesus’ heel. It is worth asking how Satan did such a thing. In what way did Satan “bruise” Jesus’ “heel?” Through spiritual warfare. When Jesus was on Earth, Satan personally tempted him in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11). Additionally, it was Satan who provoked Judas to betray Jesus (Luke 22:3).
Biblical Authority - Vision Month 2026
According to Jesus, the Word of God is true. It tells people what is real. It provides an absolute, authoritative, and accurate account of who God is, who humankind is, what life is about, what’s gone wrong with the world, and how the world can be made right. Human logic and reason ultimately fail at some point, but the Bible never fails. It is a rock-solid foundation of truth in a world that is so often skeptical about truth. In the Bible, we have a book that is unlike any other. The true pursuit of God travels through the pages of the Bible.
Stewardship - Vision Month 2026
Resources are required for any church to fulfill its purpose and priorities. Consequently, the Lord has ordained that his people give of their income to support the work of ministry.
Strategic Initiatives - Vision Month
The phrase “during a particular season” is especially important. Our purpose—Connecting People to Christ—is enduring. Our ministry priorities —Worship, Fellowship, Discipleship, and Outreach— describe what the church consistently does. Our strategic initiatives identify the areas where we believe focused attention today will make the greatest difference in our ability to connect people to Christ tomorrow.
Driven by Purpose - Vision Month
From the pages of Scripture, let’s consider six concepts from biblical history that promote the mission and purpose of the church….
The Strength for Our Spiritual War
Fortunately for God’s children, the Lord has given specially revealed truth about such matters. God’s Word provides straightforward truth about angels, demons, and the Devil. It also informs us regarding how we might have power over unseen spiritual forces.
The Struggle in Our Spiritual War
To stand against Satan, the believer must know something of Satan’s strategies. One does not need to comprehend deep mysteries about the Devil and demons. Indeed, some look too much into these matters, straining to see and perceive things God has never intended for them to see and perceive. However, there is definitely a need for believers to have a baseline knowledge concerning the spirit realm.
The Strength for our Spiritual War
Three concepts related to the strength we have for spiritual war…-The Power of Our Strength (v. 10)-The Person of Our Strength (v. 10)-The Practical Means of Our Strength (v. 11)
The Scene of Our Spiritual War
According to Scripture, to be a Christian is to be enlisted in a spiritual war. It may seem that unbelievers are more prone to the attacks of spiritual forces. In a sense, such is true, since Satan has blinded believers from perceiving the realities of God (2 Corinthians 4:4). In another sense, such is not true, since believers live in direct opposition to the world system that surrounds them.
