Crone and King Deliver, Padres Force Game 4
That. Was. Stressful. The Padres didn't have Mason Miller or Adrian Morejon, but they managed to scrape away a high stress 4-3 win in Game 3. Jake Cronenworth had his biggest swing in four years, and Michael King got six outs to seal the deal. Darnay and Todd relive a nailbiter. 📺 On Friar is available on YouTube! Brewers Stun Miller and SD, Series 2-0 After Second Gut Punch
The Padres return home with elimination at their doorstep. Once again San Diego had the lead and the ball in the hands of a stud reliever. Once again the Brewers stunned the Padres, to take a 2-0 lead in the NLDS. Mason Miller was asked to do a lot, and did not deliver. Craig Stammen made a decision at catcher that backfired. And the lineup continues to leave a ton of meat on the bone. Can a resilient team bounce back? 📺 On Friar is available on YouTube! Padres Making Their Move, Red Hot with Three Series Left
The Padres wrapped up a huge road trip with back-to-back lopsided wins over the Rockies. They are in prime position in the Wild Card - four games up on Arizona - thanks to 10 wins in 11 games. Derek and Darnay discuss how they've gotten it done. The rotation has been much steadier, and the lineup is crushing it. Merrill is playing out of his mind. Harris has become the answer in a key spot in the order. Ethan Salas! Now the high leverage bullpen arms have some rest heading into the final nine games. Padres Get Hot at Home, Stammen, Salas and Lineup Questions
The Padres had to sweat it out often against the Yankees and Nats, but it amounted to a very successful homestand. Two straight series wins, including a sweep of the Nats. They needed a strong last week, with Arizona showing some close game mettle as well. Luis Campusano and Jackson Merrill played huge. Nick Pivetta came back. Now they hit the road against two of the worst teams in the National League. Derek and Darnay discuss an encouraging stretch, and the two weeks ahead. 📺 On Friar is available on YouTube! Padres Slump a Cause for Concern, Salas Arrives, Joe's Setback
Well, this isn't good. The Padres got swept in Tampa then dropped a series in Cincy. Familiar flaws have shown up on offense, while the bullpen has suddenly become shaky. Casey Mize's struggles continued. And Joe Musgrove's status for 2026 is now in doubt. Darnay catches up with Sports Illustrated MLB writer Ryan Phillips. What do we think of Ethan Salas' arrival? Padres Aren't Making it Easy, Pitching Updates, Owners Arrive
After a weekend sweep the Padres met their bold new owners, the vibes were great - and then that Pirates series happened. Derek and Darnay discuss what went wrong, and where there are areas of concern. What's going on with Manny? And what have we seen from Merrill? There were encouraging pitching performances, and updates on a few key arms. Mason Miller gave up a homer, but responded like a stud. Padres Back In Control of a Playoff Spot and No-No Joe is On the Way
The Padres went 3-3 on their road trip but the important thing is they are back in control of the final National League Wild Card spot, and thing seem to be trending in the right direction. Derek talks about how Fernando Tatis Jr. looks like he's playing in 2021, the adjustment Manny Machado made to his batting stance (dare we say he employed an analytics-inspired change?), how the trade deadline helped the entire starting rotation, and the change to Joe Musgrove's routine that strongly suggests he's just about ready to be back on the mound in a big league game. 📺 On Friar is available on YouTube! Padres Are Rolling! Brewers Sweep Puts SD in Playoff Position
This club is on fire right now! A sweep of the team with the best record in the National League, capped by Campy's first career walk off. Pretty much everyone is hitting, and the rotation has turned in some fine performances. Derek and Darnay discuss the vibes around the team, and what we should take from their hot streak. Rocky Start Post-Deadline, Good and Bad News for Rotation
Monday's deadline appeared to be a promising one for the Padres, but the immediate returns have not been great. Casey Mize got roughed up. Will Robbie Ray have a steadier hand on Friday? The bats go hot and cold during their most crucial series yet. Joe seems to be getting closer. What is happening with Pivetta? 📺 On Friar is available on YouTube! Padres Add Ray and Mize, Keep Bullpen Intact at Deadline
The Padres addressed their biggest need by adding a familiar face. Robbie Ray just shoved at Petco Park, and has been red hot. Then just before the buzzer A.J. Preller brought Casey Mize to town. Both are having strong seasons, and join a rotation in dire need of reinforcements. Derek and Darnay discuss the additions, who it cost to get them - as well as the players who are sticking around for a playoff push. 📺 On Friar is available on YouTube! What Will Preller Do This Time? Padres Heat Up in Time to Buy
The Padres have won five straight games and suddenly the Wild Card landscape looks a lot more gettable. So what will A.J. Preller pull off this time? Derek and Darnay discuss what we've seen from the team the last five games. How big of a buyer could they be? The rotation is the most glaring need, but where else could they upgrade? And what does the team have to offer in a trade? What potential trade targets could be in the Padres' price range? It's Now or Never - Padres 2nd Half Predictions
For all intents and purposes the playoffs start now for the Padres. If they don't turn it on to start the second half, they probably won't buy and might just sell at the deadline. If they prove they're a postseason team AJ Preller will load up for a run at the Wild Card. With the All-Star break winding down Derek and Darnay discuss the make or break road trip and give predictions for the Padres' second half. 📺 On Friar is available on YouTube! Is This Progress? How Will Coming Weeks Shape Trade Deadline?
Is the worst behind the Padres? Sure hope so. A dreadful eight days left them with a lot of work to do in the Wild Card race. This week the club appears to have shaken off the slump. And they need that to continue into and beyond the All-Star break. Jake Cronenworth and Luis Campusano are back and have provided some impactful swings. The lineup erupted Wednesday against Arizona. Starting pitching remains an issue, but a few arms have turned in stellar performances. Are they moving in the right direction? Derek and Darnay discuss that and implications heading ahead of the Trade Deadline. 📺 On Friar is available on YouTube! Suddenly things have gotten bleak. The Cubs handed the Padres an embarrassing beatdown, pushing their losing streak to five games. And now they visit the Dodgers. Are the Padres Back? Challenges Continue With Dodgers in Town
Are the Padres back? The offense has been more consistent and the stars are showing up, as they did on the way to becoming the first team to sweep the Braves. The rotation still has its questions. Padres Going from Bad to Worse, How do They Get on Track?
For the second straight week the Padres got swept by the Phillies. Manny and Merrill homered in the finale, but that won't distract anyone from the club's continued struggles at the plate. The Padres got swept for the first time, capping a homestand where they were straight up miserable at the plate with runners in scoring position. How down bad is this club right now? Balancing Good and Bad After Bitter End to Dodger Series
The Padres took some steps in Seattle, then battled the Dodgers. But Wednesday's series finale came with a familiar twinge of disappointment. Derek and Darnay look back at the last week and weigh the good and the bad. Tatis is still struggling. The supporting cast continues to come up big. Manny homered! But the stars are still finding their way. Michael King shoved and Griffin Canning sorta bounced back. And Lucas Giolito performed. Mason Miller is human. Offensive Slump Continues, More Changes Coming to Rotation
If not for a couple game changing swings from Nick Castellanos and Gavin Sheets the Padres would really be having a lousy week. They went out with a whimper Thursday in Milwaukee, in a game that saw Griffin Canning get shelled. Matt Waldron is headed to the bullpen, with Lucas Giolito on his way. Roster Shakeup as Padres (Seem to) Shake off Slump
After dropping consecutive series Craig Stammen and the Padres seemed to right the ship in San Francisco. Are we confident that their offensive lull is over, for now at least? Jackson Merrill has come alove. And Bogey keeps going boom. Jake Cronenworth is out, Sung Mun-Song made a strong first impression. Luis Campusano is out, hello Rodolfo Duran. Griffin Canning arrived and twirled a gem in his debut. Matt Waldron answered with his best performance of the year. Roster Questions for Now and an Annoying Topic for the Future
Spring Training is less than a month away. The last week brought more rumors, but once again little to no action. Will a trade to clear salary open the floodgates? Would it make sense to deal Nick Pivetta? Sounds like the Brewers want to move Freddy Peralta - should the Padres get involved? Apparently they checked in on Nolan Arenado.
