The Orlando Magic previewed their full potential with Jalen Suggs' return to the lineup. He immediately made an impact as the Magic came out far more aggressively than they did on Sunday and dominated the Cleveland Cavaliers for a 132-116 victory.Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner both set the tone, each eclipsing 20 points and combining to score the team's first 17 points. That helped pick the offense up as it returned to the fast-paced, aggressive and pass-happy group that turned heads in their first preseason game. CHECKUP: Where the Orlando Magic STAND at preseason's midpoint | What the Magic have left to PROVE
The Orlando Magic have had a strong game and a struggling game in the first two of their four preseason games. They have shown how their offense can evolve and the team can take the next step. But they have also left plenty on the board.The team has yet to see the whole picture come together. Several key players are still missing in action due to minor injuries. Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner have yet to fully assert themselves.With just two preseason games remaining, there is still work to do.The most immediate concern is clearly getting Banchero's shooting back on track. REVISITED: What will STICK from Orlando Magic's preseason debut | Looming BATTLE at center
The Orlando Magic are still basking a bit in a breakthrough performance in their first preseason game. The Magic's offense genuinely impressed and it feels like something the Magic can replicate and build on.There is, of course, plenty to work on. As good as the Magic were and as open as the shots they got, the Magic are unlikely to make 21 of 45 from three again. Their defense showed signs of strength, but also fouled a lot. The team can still refine itself.But if the Magic's goal was to play fast and physical, they accomplished that in their opening game.There are still a lot of questions. The biggest will be the battle for who is the backup center.Goga Bitadze gives the team the defensive anchor it is looking for at center while Nikola Vucevic is still a reliable shooter and scorer. Both will have a role to play this season. And the Magic will have to decide what they are willing to gamble on with whoever wins this battle.The other development from Wednesday's game was the emergence of Franz Wagner as a lead creator and initiator. This is an aspect of Wagner's game they have rarely relied on. The Orlando Magic's long-dormant offense showed some serious signs of life in a fast-paced and hot-shooting preseason debut against the Memphis Grizzlies. ANSWERS: How the Orlando Magic plan to FIX some of their biggest problems
The Orlando Magic have a lot of issues to correct as they try to prepare for the season. There is lots to build off of from last season and a lot the team needs to rethink.The Magic's struggling offense and shooting are the highest-profile problem. Orlando is hoping better spacing and more intentional offense can get higher-quality three-point shots and improve the team's offense.They are also hoping better health can unlock a bench that has struggled to score and match the strong showing they had in the 2024 season. The Orlando Magic will be sorting out several key rotation spots when training camp begins in four weeks. Those got put more in flux with underwhelming performances from Goga Bitadze and Tristan da Silva at FIBA World Cup Qualifying this weekend. Neither player played poorly. But neither showed a big step forward, putting their rotation spots in jeopardy as training camp approaches. Nikola Vucevic will likely take over the backup center spot with his scoring ability, leaving Goga Bitadze to remain the spot starter when injuries hit.
